Dont waste your time trying to modify Beretta mags for the XD. Its a major cause of problems. The XD mags will hold 10 rounds and one in the chamber for a total of 11....man if you need more than that you need alot of practice time. I own an XD in 357sig. Recoil is nothing to worry about, again alot of practice on your part might be what you need. All pistols recoil somewhat, its something you have to get used to. As far as 9mm goes...its good for target practice....for self defense go with the .40 or 357sig. Now alot of people say the newer 9mm ammo high tech stuff delievers just as good as the .40....dont believe it for a second. .40 and 357sig also have high tech ammo which is hotter and faster so it kind of shoots down the 9mm ammo thing. If 9mm was so good why are most police and government agencies going to the 357sig or .40 and some the .45????? The caliber you choose to protect yourself is a personal thing...go with what you trust.

I don't like the 40S&W and the model wasn't available when I bought my Gen 1 HS2Ks, so it was an easy choice. But if you go the 9mm route, the 40 or 357SiG mags hold 14 or 15 9mms.

I have the 4" in 40 S&W and the compact in 9mm! IMO the only benefit of the 9mm is the factory 40's for hi-caps! My 9mm will be replaced with the compact .40 when it comes out! I prefer the .40 over the 9mm and the recoil is less than most other .40's I've fired! I've also fired the ported .40 so if recoil is your only drawback you might want to consider it as it has the recoil of a 9mm!

Go with whichever caliber you can fire most accurately. Try before you buy.
The fifteen rounds of 9mm really do fit into a 10 round .40 S&W magazine, though I've not yet gotten to try its reliability though. |

SA XD are great firearms. I own a 5" 40 cal and a 4" 9mm.
The 9mm is very tame. Plus, like another poster stated, you can buy 40 cal mags (about 20-25 each) and load 12-15 9mm rounds. To hold 15, you will proably need to tweak the mag follower. To To tame the recoil in my 5" 40, it was sugguested buy the folks over at the HS2000talk group to install a 24 lb 1911 recoil spring in place of the factory spring. So far, no issues. Recoil reduction can be felt. As far as 40 recoil, I know what you mean. A little snappy in a polymer gun. I also have a Glock 23 (Gen 1), which is a wrist flipper. |

Someone has already posted it, I believe, but the XD 4" comes in a ported version as well, well worth the extra $30 or so, since it acts just like a muzzle brake/compensator on an AR-15/M-16. Also, practice will get you up to par on your double taps.

G-man, I don't know if this helps, but I'm an FFL and also a Wilson Master Dealer. My sales mngr (and my nephew)had his choice of any gun he wanted and chose the XD in .40 as his carry gun. He's never had a failure and I've shot it and found it to shoot very well. I'm not wild about the sights, but sig night sites fit the XD. It has really great safety features and again is very reliable. Also, it's probably the most reasonably priced handgun available.

I've got the XD 40 in 5" and a XD 9 4". The 9 doesn't recoil that much. It is actually my wife's gun. The 40 recoils most with the 180 (185) grain bullets. It is much more manageable with the 165's.

I have a XD-40 service with the OD frame that I have been packing for almost a year now. This is prob the best handgun I own. I had a Sig 226 in 40 that I was not thrilled with and one of my coworkers wanted it so I sold it to him. The recoil on the XD is better than the Sig and it shoot better. I like the 165 gr. Feeds everything.

I have an XD9 and an XD357. I really like them both. If you are recoil sensitive, you can purchase a non-captive guide rod and buy higher tension springs. I've never been a big fan of ported guns, especially if you ever plan on using night sights. They will be hard to keep clean.

Go with the .40! shot placement is what counts. Why do you need 15 rounds? If I can't take a BG down in 10 or less I don't deserve a gun. Just my opinion. As for recoil the XD's are front heavy anyhow. Recoil is not a problem with the .40 cal.

I really like my XD9. It's a great little gun. The recoil is very mild. I wanted something my girlfriend could handle and the XD9 fit the bill nicely.

I bought a LNIB XD9 earlier today at gander mtn. It had the box, papers, and two mags for $309.00. It feels much more comfortable in my hands than my glocks, and a nice high axis like my sig's...Can't wait to run a couple of boxes through her.....looks like the walther p99 will have to wait awhile....

S&W 59 series high caps can also be modified to fit the XD. Fits flush unlike the beretta mags.
But if you don't want to bother with modding anything, get the xd 40 mags for the xd9. They fit and hold 15 rounds, I believe. Also legal to use in the XD9 per the batf. See hs2000talk.com for more details on that. |

I have an XD40 Tactical 5" that I used exclusively in IPSC production division for the entire 2003 season. I love mine. Up here in Kanuckistan using firearms for defence is a no-no but, if I were to choose a pistol for carry purposes I kind of tend to split the deck in the middle. U got the 9mm fans on one end and the .45acp guys on the other. I like the .40 as its in the middle of the road as per bullet weight and diameter. I am a fan of bigger is better to a point, and regardless of caliber as the old saying goes...shot placement, shot placement, shot placement. Choose the cal that you can consistantly get better hits with than any other.

Just got mine.I think it's the coolest gun to come out in a while,and I love how tiny and cool it looks....I hear it shoots good too:)
Got a XD-9 Sub-Compact Blue with XML mini-tactical light.And yes,the little thing is very bright,I was impressed.It looks f-ckin kewl on the sub-compact too....like something out of an Anime movie,all tiny and beefy lookin.The loaded chamber indicator is something that should be on all weapons.Neat piece! |

I have the XD 4 " in a .40. Recoil is tame.
I used to carry a Ruger .357 4" barrel. I won't look back. I have both the XD9 and XD9 subcompact. Recoil is not an issue with either of the guns for me. The XD40 mags will fit in an XD9. With a slight bending of the lips you can use them to hold 9mm. I think you can get 13 rounds in these modified mags (some have said 14?). I like the XD9. I did not go for the 40SW because that would mean another caliber in the house. I own 45ACP chambered pistols (Kimber Ultra Carry II, Colt Lightweight Commander, S&W 1917 Revolver), and also 9mm (Glock 17). I traded a Glock 26 for the XD9 Subcompact. Another gun in another caliber would start to be confusing. Good luck in your choice. |

I have a Springfield XD-9 4 inch model in black and I have to say, Its the best gun I EVER spent my money on! Flawless functioning, plenty of rounds, great ergonomics,minimal recoil, and it just feels good! I carry it regularly, and convert Glock users constantly. All they have to do is shoot it.

Having shot this pistol tons of times
when I worked at a pistol range, I say I have to favor the 9mm... three reasons 1) the 9mm is more accurate. And anybody knows it's not stopping power but shot placement. 2) The 9mm has less chamber pressure. the 40's and .357sigs have minimum Chamber pressures of 38,000 psi or higher. This is the same as a .30-30win in a polymer handgun. Bad ammo causing blow-ups tends to be more common in this caliber. I know this because my Glock 23 blew up on me. 9mm only has 27,000 to 34,000 psi depending on the load. .45 is 18,000 to 26,000 Quite a bit longer frame life because of this 3) The Ammo is alot cheaper! Bottom line if you want more stopping power, go with the .45 as it is also more accurate, and has less chamber pressure. Since the gun you are looking at is not available in .45. Make your choice for the more accurate round! I love this gun! -Chuck |

I bought the XD357 in Dec....I bought the XD Sub Compact last Thursday...now I want the XD40 and the XD sub Compact 40....when will it end? Both my XD's perform flawlessly...and I've got to get me one of those little lights!!!!

If you're talking about the XD trigger, it's a long SA, light and crisp but with some travel and a longer reset than a 1911. SA Custom shop has a trigger service for either carry or competition, IIRC, the carry service is $75.00 and the Competition service is $135.00. They want you to sign a waver for the Comp work since it takes it down to about 3#. |

I've owned a XD .40 for over a year now. I've fired over 2500rds. through it, and its never jammed! It seems that everytime I shoot the gun it gets more and more accurate! I just love it! And as far as the recoil thing goes, I own a Sig P228 (law enforcement model) 9mm. And I would say there's not much less recoil, and I would have to say that the .40 is more accurate. Go with the .40. But either way Springfield made one great gun, have fun shooting!

I'd say go with the XD40. The recoil is not that bad and you can swap it to a .357 sig with an another barrel from Barsto plus you can buy an aftermarket guide rod and spring from Don at www.hs2000.com/ for under $20. I own an XD9mm, and although it's been nothing but good to me,I sometimes wish I would've gotten the XD40 just because with the swap of a barrel it's a .357 sig.

Another XD40 owner checking in. Recoil isnt that bad. I have Dons Guide Rod and the drop in 22 spring that he sells with it. Just installed ITI M3 today and it fits pretty well. I love my XD

Picked up the XD-40 today. Very light and comfortable in the hand. Breaks down quick and easy. With a hard case and two mags I paid $425 out the door. I was going to get the 9mm, but I like the fact that I can convert the 40 to a different caliber simply by changing the barrel. It's a keeper! |

I just picked up my XD-40 yesterday. Local gunshop had them on sale for 379.99 and going to go shoot it tomorrow. In amounst my papers Springfield had an ad that you can buy direct from them 17 round beretta 92 mags at 34.95 a piece. Does anyone know of any hi cap 96 mags. I'm not a beretta fan so not sure what's out there. I've been really impressed with the Xd's since they came out, one of the latest gun magazines did a write up on the 357sig XD. 5k rounds of Federals, only problem was the trigger pin walked alittle bit, no other failures. I've heard of alot of other reports claiming similar results. I think that speaks in itself the quality of the Springfield pistols. This is my first 40sw, 1911 fan at heart , I look forward to giving it a workout.

Yet another XD40 owner, I currently own a green 5" that I love, but am trading it for a 4" black one Saturday! The guy I am trading with wants a 5" for competition shooting and I am looking for duty carry. I am extremely happy with my XD and would not own anything else. I unlike others, do not degrate someone for choosing a weapon that I didn't

I just purchased the XD 40 and love it! I'm an Air Force cop and we use the Beretta 92. The XD 40 fires so much smoother than the lower cal 92.

I've had mine XD40 for about a month and I love it.Im new to handguns so can't really tell you how bad the recoil is but it seems better than my old S&W sigma.

Go to a range that will let you rent, shoot the ones your interested in, buy the gun you shoot better.
As far as 9vs40vs357vs45 its where you put the bullets. If you shoot the 40 well go with the 40 spend lots of time shooting it and you will improve with it even more. No one here can make a decision about the best gun or caliber for you. Spend more time at the range and less time letting other ppl make your decisions, all the XD's are great! Semper Fi |

Let's think with our heads here for just a second. Do you really think that the polymer grip "holds" the pressure of the burning powder? Ask yourself these questions and then read the above statement again: 1: What part of the gun encases the round when it is fired? 2: What is this part made of? Hopefully you come to the conclusion that the material of the grip doesn't have anything to do with chamber pressure or guns blowing up. |
