i just got my springfield ultra compact mil spec 1911A1. does anyone know(1) where can i get a black parkerized ambidextrous safety? (2) can i install myself or is this something that only a gunsmith can do?

Brownells should have what you want. There's also Wilson, Denny's, Midway & Cylinder & Slide. There's others but these guys are the Big Boys.

You can fit it yourself but be VERY careful when you do it. Wilson usually provides a set directions to go by. Follow them carefully

Good luck finding a Parked safety.  I have searched through the 3 million pages of 1911 stuff in the Brownells catalog and found excactly nothing.  Your best bet, believe it or not, is probably Ebay.  If not, just buy a blued version you like and have someone Park it for you.

buy a blue and get it parked
Wilson makes good safties.

it's a fun project for the mechanically inclined
fit it first and then have it parked.


first take the gun completely apart.
put in just the pieces that you need to make the hammer fall.  watch how your factory safety manipulates the parts and get it fixed in your mind how everything goes together before you take file to steel

repeatedly function check
