I have an XD-40 Tactical and I love it. I've ran tons of rounds through it and never had a single jam, extraction, or feed problem.  The think eats ammo like crazy.

I've also shot the XD-9 Tactical , also the plan XD-9 service model.  The XD-9 Tactical seems to have just a little less muzzle flip than my .40, so quick follow up shots are a little easier.  The recoil feels about the same though.

As far as a 9mm vs .40 vs .45.......I really don't know what to tell you.  I just got the .40 because I was wanting a tactical model and at the time that's all I could find.  I think I'm glad I bought the .40 though.....a little more accurate than the XD-9 I shot, and more knock down power if I ever need it.  If you are wanting a gun to target shoot with....get the tactical (5" barrel).

I think the XD-9 or XD-40 would be a great 1st gun to have.

I have an XD-9 Service model in OD green. I think it would make a great first gun. I also think it makes a great carry gun. The XD-9 is slimmer than the XD-40 so it conceals well. I am planning on adding an XD-45ACP shortly. The recoil of the 45 is not near as snappy as the 40. Also the 45 holds one more round than the 40. The XD-45ACP is basically the same size as the XD-40 except the grip is 1/4" longer.

I've held my XD-40 next to my friends XD-9....and they are the exact same width.  Unless they have changed something recently.  ??

If you are comparing a XD-9 Service with a XD-40 Service you will notice the slide is wider. Blade-Tech lists different holsters for these guns. And yes I have owned both.

My CCW is an XD 9 subcompact.  I love it.

I would also say that's a great first gun. has good safety features and indicators, ergonomics, easy to dissasemble, easy to get familiar with and very reliable which is important to have faith in your gun especially for a first one. Also there's quite a few accessories for it now. Cheapest practice ammo too.

Thats not a bad choice for your first. Go with the 9 then work your way up.

I sincerely recommend price check on ammo first and serious thought as to why you are not getting a 45.
