Self defense gun - AR15.COM

I own a Smith and Wesson model 67 .38 special +P revolver. The consensus on the net seems to be that 38 special is not a very good self defense caliber. What do you think? Should I sell my 67 and buy a 357 magnum?

A .38+P is not a bad defensive round. My question(s) would be, is this for home defense or carry, anyone else also using the gun, what barrel length is it?

My personal favorites are the Smith 686+ for home (and carry under large clothes) and the Ruger SP101 for easily concealed carry.

The gun is for home defense, and I will be the only one using it. It has a 4 inch barrel. I'm also considering getting a crimson trace laser on it.
I didn't want a snub nose because I hear they're not too acurate and the smaller barrel means a weaker stopping power, not to mention greater recoil. My gun is rather easy to control and fits pretty well. I do enjoy shooting it.

I've had pretty good luck with my Ruger SP-101 so far. It's the sub 2" barrel 357mag. with a bobbed hammer.

The 4" barrel is fine for home defense. Personally, I would skip the laser, but that's up to you. A snub nose's accuracy is fine out to 25 feet, and that's more than enough for in a house, and for most any defense situation.

I think you have an excellent set up for what you want to use it for. Practice with regular special loads, but run a cylinder of +P every once in a while to keep the feel of the added recoil if you ever *have to* use it.

model 10 smith was first hand gun .I have other guns rugers,smiths glocks &1911s but i have no trouble sleeping with the +p loaded sixshooter laying on the headboard....pass on the lazer and buy a good flashlight and ammo....

( no home invader or burgler is going to jump back up and yell "no fair man thats just a 38")

10-4 on skipping the laser!
They cost too much and if you perfect your technique you won't need it. Especially when the batteries are dead! Don't rely on gimmicks sharpen your insticts. I know SWAT,SEALS, and all use them but I don't see any place for them in home defense. Heck if you have to shoot targets with a sack over your head.

PS Keep the gun you have. If you change guns you'll have spend sometime on changing your technique to go with it.

I also vote for keeping it. The S&W 67 is a fine gun and .38+P is a perfectly adequate caliber.
