The series 1 is true to the 1911's original design. The series 2 has grip safety activated firing pin block assembly added to it.

You like taking a mason jar full of nitroglycerin and shaking it violently...dont you.

Honestly, there is no real reason for the firing pin safety, other than legal protection for the company. Yes, it is just one more thing that can break and go wrong. That said, I have no hesitation at all carrying my two Series II TLE's daily. Do I wish Kimber still made them in Series I format? Sure. Will that stop me from having another? Not in the least.

my kimber classic must be a series I then, as i dont think i see a firing pin block in there...

which in my book, is GOOD...

so would a series I be kind of the same thing as a pre-80 series colt?

thanks!

im thrilled with it... i was saving for a wilson cqb when i saw the kimber at my local range...

came with 3 wilson mags, galco leather, and hogue grips... got it all for around $750...

it was my first 1911 pistol, and all i can say is im in love...

you know, with all the hubub lately about the "marsoc" and "det-1" pistols, i think id rather get another one of these classics (if i can find one), and add on all the tactical goodies myself... it would cost less, and id end up with a series I pistol instead of the series II that the det-1 will end up being (since kimber only seems to make series II pistols now)...

I second the Wilson CQB. Just picked mine up.
Two-tone black slide on grey frame with ambi safety, mag well and accessory rail. Only change I'm making is to put a full length guide rod in it.
I currently carry a Kimber CDP Pro serie II.
I'll stay with the Kimber for carry since it is lighter (alloy frame)
