I absolutely concur with the previous responses. The .357 Sig caliber is indeed balistically impressive, but the ammo costs are simply
too prohibitive. Earlier this year, I seriously considered buying a USP Compact/.357 Sig from CDNN (they had a really good deal on NIB pistols in that caliber, and probably still do). This seemed, at the time, like the perfect CCW weapon. However, after researching the high costs of .357 Sig ammo (for both practice and defensive loads),
I quickly backed off! Locally, the price of .357 Sig "practice ammo" (i.e., FMJ "ball" ammo) is generally
double the price of identical 9mm ammo. As such, I ended up getting a USP Compact in 9mm as my carry piece
and I'm very pleased with it.Essentially, the .357 Sig bullet is really just a high-pressure 9mm round to begin with, albeit in a "necked-down" shell casing. The ballistic advantages of the .357 Sig cartridge over the 9mm can just about be acheived in the latter caliber
with the right load. For example, my 9mm carry ammo is
Winchester Ranger-T 127 gr. +P+ (RA9TA)...this 9mm load just about replicates the performance of comparable defensive loads in .357 Sig (RA357SIGT), but at a lower cost. In fact, if you take a look at the cartridge comparison tool on the Winchester LE website, the RA9TA load
equals or surpasses the RA357SIGT load in several tests (namely: bullet expansion, bullet penetration, and bullet weight retention). Go here
Winchester LE Ammo Comparison Tool for more details.
Furthermore, the
much wider availability of 9mm ammo is a huge plus for me!
