looking to find some ammo for plinking only, without breaking wallet.

For ball ammo, I buy the 100-round "value packs" at Wal-Mart - cheaper than most of the bulk ammo available when you consider shipping costs, and you can buy as few or as many as you want (as opposed to 1000 rounds at a time for the bulk price, etc.).   It also depends somewhat, of course, upon your local sales-tax rate.

ETA:  Depnding upon where you are, local gun shows sometimes have very good deals on .45 ball as well.

$17-18/100 for Winchester "white box" .45ACP ball.  Good ammo at a good price IMHO.  Wal-Mart's on my way home from work & I stop by at least once a week for "staple goods" anyway, so I'll pick up a box or two, depending on what I've shot lately & how much I need to top off my stash.  (FWIW, I buy all of my other "military" and handgun calibers in bulk, either from Ammoman or Georgia Arms.  .45 ball & hunting ammo are usually my only Wal-Mart ammo purchases.)

$19/100 rounds of Winchester "white box" at my local WalMart. I picked some up a couple of weeks ago at the recommendation of my suppressor's manufacturer. He claimed he got the best dB reduction shooting those.

My USP .45 loves American Ammuntion.  Off hand groups of 3'' or less are regular at 25 yrds with this stuff.

What are you planning to shoot in it, you can order Wolf at approx $8 a box delivered.  Also check AIM surplus for the MFS stuff.

Id avoid the stuff that American Amminition makes, I had issues.

I hope that you know there have been quite a few Kabooms with American Ammo!  And, the brass is is not high on reloaders list either! Beware!

I have had outstanding results, price and accuracy, with Lancer factory reloads.  When Kiesler's had it, out now I think, it ran about $80/500 six months ago, but I notice Cabelas sells it for $80/300, which I think is sort of high especially when you factor in shipping.  Midway has it for $220/1000 ($179/1000 if you are a dealer or an 03 C&R holder, see, that right there pays for the three year C&R 03 FFL but I stray) which is right in the middle.
