I have a USP Tac that came with 3 neutered mags.

I have been fiddling with my mags for awhile and am really starting to wonder if I can remove a few plastic tabs and make it hold 12 rounds.If you look at the piece at the base of the spring, there are long plastic tabs on it that don't seem to do much other than prevent 2 more rounds from being inserted into the mag.  Also, the spring follower has a LONG plastic tab hanging off the bottom of it that seems like if I trimmed part of the tab off, it would allow more rounds into the mag.

I took all the guts out of the mag and it will hold 12 rounds easily.  I put the mag follower in under the rounds and that long plastic tab extends down all the way to the floorplate so it would need to be trimmed a bit.

I am about convinced that I can doctor this thing to hold 12 rounds and prevent having to spend money on "Noban" mags after Monday.

I wanted some input before I go butchering my mags.

Legally they had to be made to fall apart if you attempt that.

I had some 12 rounders that were sold to me by mistake and I returned them promptly
But before I returned them I examined them closely and  the only way that I could see that you could modify them after the Sunset of the AWB would be to order the 12 round baseplate

Well, of course I meant I would wait until Monday to modify them.

You think they would work with a different baseplate?

Is there any way you can take pics of a 12 round baseplate so I can see the difference?

I dont have the magazines, From what I remember there is no plastic catch tabs on the 12 rounders

your stuck with 10 rounds ....... I just talked to a friend of mine who is a HK armorer

The 10 rounders do not have the lip on the bottom of the mag body to hold on the baseplate that the 12 round and 8 (.45 USPC) mags do.  If you cannot hold them in with the clip in those two side holes, you cannot hold them in.  And with anything going into the mag to attach to the side holes, you cannot put more ammo in.  While anything can be done if you have enough time, money and ambition, it is far easier to just buy the 12 round mags.  Afterall, it is not like the full cap mags (including white and .45) have not been readily available for years.  After Monday, they will still be there and likely at 2/3 the price.

To clarify, the 12 round baseplate slides onto a L shaped lip on the bottom sides of the magazine like Para Ordnance and Beretta.  There is no lip on the 10 round mags, so no way to attach the 12 round baseplate.  I guess you could cut the mags body and bend out the sides to make a lip, but then I would bet they would be too short to work in the frame.

I'll just stick with factory mags.  I bought my HK's because they are the most reliable handguns out there.  No sense in saving a few bucks butchering some magazines to squeeze a few more rounds in there at the risk of reliability.

i altered my mag back when i first bought the gun just out of curiosity i only did one out of the four i own i would say i have probably put 8,000 rounds thru it and i have never had a malfunction of any kind not one
i couldn't say how many of the 8,000 were from the altered mag
a very reliable firearm indeed, hands down the most reliable auto i have ever owned
