I am thinking an older Detective Special as they are about the right size, but my 1970s DS has a different shape that requires a "step" in the top of the grip.
Any idea as to what model Colt these came from?

Yup, the original Detective special had a full-sized grip, the later generations had the Agent sized shorter grip.
