Glaring omission in the ol ' gun safe is a DA Colt revolver.
What is the quintessential Colt DA revolver I should consider?

  Don't dismiss the Diamondback: All the Python goodness on a Detective Special frame, with calibers from .38 Special all the way down to .22LR. |

I have to say Python with the Official Police right behind it. The Python is a work of art, but the OP rode in so many LEO holsters for years that it deserves mention.

New Service Commercial model in .45 Colt or .44/40.
Python with a 4" barrel. Colt Detective Special. All are useful, all have (at least the earlier Dick Specials did) the traditional V mainspring. Go with what niche you want to fill. I warn you, however. Colts have a habit of multiplying. They have even been known to corrupt you into sacrificing other occupants of the gun safe in order to acquire more Colts. |

I find the Colt Trooper MK III to be quite nice. I have one in 22LR and it is a keeper.

How many rounds have you shot through each Don't have a Python right now but I do have a "pre Python that predates the Python by one year and has a trigger that is so sweet that it's like music to my fingers. Still locks up tighter then a conservative's wallet at a Obama fund raiser. I've shot plenty thru my Det specials, mostly 158 or 148 grain lead loads. I have thosands of rounds of mid range 148 full wad cutter, it's not a bad load at all to shoot thru a snub. I not a fan of snubbie L/W .357s for a reason and don't own a single one. If I want more power in a revolver, I have much more powerful rounds then .357 or I'll just go to a semi auto. |

I have a Commando Special that has a very sweet trigger . The thing really like to be pulled double action and is surprisingly accurate . I have thought of replacing her with a bright shiny nickel Cobra but every time I shoot the commando I 'am less inclined . The Cobra is very lite and I believe it would not be a very good target shooter . The commando has a nice recoil and I like the rubber grips . No failures of any kind and I bought her used .

Too many great Colt models to pick an alltime "best" for that category IMO. Of all of my big bores...the 4" King Cobra (right side...second from the top) is one of my all time favorites as a great shooter. JETWC - You do know that the stocks pictured on your Python are not original Colt stocks. They are aftermarket stocks or possibly reproductions of the 2nd generation Python style stock. Just want to make sure you were not decieved that they were original.

It came with the rubber grips but I found these from a Colt collector and really like the looks. |
