Specifically looking for it in 9mm, current generation.  Went to a local shop that told me "no idea" on the turnaround for ordering (they had one in a few weeks ago, but gone when I went back).  Another shop told me, ".40 wouldn't be hard to get, but in 9...maybe 6 mos or longer, even for the QA".  From what the 2nd place told me, Walther is way behind in keeping up with the demand and it could be quite a wait to nab one.

Can anyone validate?  P22s and PPS's everywhere, but no new P99 AS!

I was in the market for one recently. they are around, but vastly outnumber by the amount of QAs out there. For example my local gun show had maybe 9~10 QA's one AS in .40 and only one in 9mm. They pop up on gun broker all the time (but only one at the time)

Here's one (though it lacks that 9mm bump on the slide just beyond the walther logo)

This one is really nice too if you like green (but not new gen like you specified) Still really nice IMO

Thanks Lockedon.  So what gives with the bump/non-bump differentiation on the slides?  Here's one that has it: http://world.guns.ru/handguns/walther_p99_as.jpg

it's only aesthetics as far as I can tell. The .40cal slides are supposed to lack the bump according to the popular (yet not recently updated) P99 F.A.Q. (see link)
Its probably the nothing to worry about...maybe that's just an exceptional year/model...I personally like the look of the bump, but that's up to personal taste. Be patient if you're not 100% satisfied....I've seen many different models pop up from time to time in recent months. Also be sure that what you get is 100% MADE IN GERMANY

ETA: Upon further inspection, if you decide to get that P99 I showed you, ask the seller to show you some pictures of the right-hand side of the gun (so you can see the german proof-marks)

Well, it turns out I can secure the exact NIB model I'm looking for (German and with "the bump" :)) w/in 4-6 weeks.  I was told by the main location of the store I'd tried this weekend that it can be done...sounds like the previous guy was hitting the pipe a little too hard. .

Lockedon, you've given me a boatload of info in this thread...much appreciated!

Thanks!

Glad I could help too.  One of the best handguns ever made in my opinion.

I wouldn't worry about the proof marks too much. As far as I know there are no 9mm P99s available that are not 100% German made. 40's are a different story.

As far as the "bump" the 9's have material removed from the frame the 40's do not do to heavier recoil spring therefor needing more weight on the slide. I was just reading through the FAQ at the top of the page. I guess they both have the same spring, I forget why the 40's have the straight slide.  Although there may be early 9mm models with the straight slide. ( I'm not that smart.)

The ski-jump on the first generation was a finger rest to prevent accidental (negligent) discharges. Apparently, some .mil or .gov types (german, i would assume) cried about the ski-jump giving them a blister, so they redesigned it. Personally, I think the discomfort stems from improper grip.

I have a 1st gen w/ skijump, and I love it, and I prefer the look/feel of the trigger guard as well as the serrations on the slide. However, the proprietary rail sucks balls... im thinking about throwing my frame into a CNC and making it a picatinny down there.

The slide is scalloped on the 9mm due to the mass of the slide being too much for the weaker 9mm to completely cycle. The scallops remove enough mass on the slide to allow the 9mm to cycle the gun.

If your getting bit and fail to RTB, then try different ammo as suggested, or stop LIMPWRISTING it!!!!
