Need list of teflon coated ammo

I need to find out what ammo is teflon coated. Ranger SXT is the only one i know of. In North Carolina it's illegal to posses it so i need to find out what i can and can't order.

"Teflon coated" huh? Boy, that is a blast from the past!

I know of no commonly available commercial ammo that uses teflon coated bullets...certainly, WW Ranger SXT does NOT! Even the older Black Talons were not teflon coated. The only thing you might find if you search hard enough is a few rounds of old "KTW". These bullets were, indeed, coated with teflon for increased penetration capability, but IIRC the concensus back then was that it really had very little effect...the material and design of the bullet were the main reasons it penetrated as well as it did.

KTW has long ago gone out of business and is not available today, nor has it been for many, many years...I dare say most here have never seen one of these rounds / bullets. The regulation is a hold-over from the old "cop-killer bullet" days.

Any good standard, +P or +P+ commercial JHP ammo you choose will not be effected by this regulation. You are "good to go"!

Thanks , is sxt coated with anything? Moly maybe? I though the whole cop killer bullet thing was long gone too but when i read that regulation i was curious if there was any around and who made it.

The Ranger SXT I am looking at as I type this is nothing more than a jacketed HP bullet, or appears to be such. I have shot hundreds of them and am not aware of any "coating"...moly or otherwise. There are, indeed, pistol caliber rounds manufactured for specialty use by LE and Military that are designed for enhanced penetration, but you won't find them available for commercial sale. The issue is a moot point anyhow, since even the guys who CAN get them seldom, if ever, bother using them...there are almost always better and more available options for them if they decide they need the penetration.

the teflon coated " cop killer " bullets were developed to give better penetration for sub guns in military and police hands.

the teflon was to protect the weapon being fired's barrel from the hard metal projectile.

when the media caught on to and created all this hoopla, all that was accomplished was to advertise to dirt bags of cops wearing body armor and to shoot accordingly and or use a rifle.

Is the Federal NyClad line still around? I used to shoot a lot of that in LSW .38.

"Teflon coated" generally refers to the KTW line as the THV line doesn't use an intermediate coating.

KTW and THV are armor piercing handgun ammunition and as such are not available for civilian purchase.

I think the confusion over the SXT is the black coloration of the Black Talon bullet.

Is there an exclusion for rifle ammo? I think some rifle bullets available for purchase to reload are teflon coated. Some of the faster wildcats come to mind. They may be calling it Moly now, but it does the same job, protecting the bbl and throat from erosion.

I had a box of Ranger SXT about 2 years ago i bought at a gun show and they were the black coated hollow point bullets like the Talon. Maybe they stopped coating them.

Modern Ranger Talons aren't coated AFAIK. Every picture I've seen of them are just plain copper jacket. Of course I've never bought a box because I'm partial to Gold Dot.

AFAIK they were never "coated" the black is just coloring.

I'm not familiar with any regulation on "black talons" in NC. I'm interested in the reg. I think the L.E.O.'s in NC don't use them anymore because the liberal media made a stink about them being used on minorities. Some B.S. about politically incorrect and whatnot. I also think the coating was to preserve the copper from tarnishing and corroding in the magazines, but I can't back that up with evidence. I know the new SXT is not coated any further and that at present some agencies are switching to Gold Dot due to price.

Well there's no doubt it was billed as that and what caused it to go off the market but the reality of how effective it was is still in question.

The real advantage to plastic covered rounds especially lead rounds is in corrosion protection and less fouling in the barrel.

In this regard, a somewhat valuable alternative was taken off the market due to media hype rather than factual data. I mean really a soft lead .38 hollow point has to be taken off the market cause the bullet is teflon coated is pretty rediculous.

If you mean regulated by the armor piercing law, that would be defined as

A projectile or projectile core which may be used in a handgun and which is constucted entirely (excluding the presence of traces of other substances) from one or a combination of tungsten alloys, steel, iron, brass, bronze, beryllium copper, or depleted uranium; or

a full jacketed projectile larger than .22 caliber designed and intended for use in a handgun and whose jacket has a weight of more than 25 percent of the total weight of the projectile.

I don't know of any laws restricting other materials used (except explosives, and Geneva convention rules for military forces, and generally controlled/restricted substances) in bullet construction.

Black Talons were coated in a paint called Lubalox. I forget what exactly it is for, but getting past armor was not one of them. Winchester took BTs of the market for civvies, and sold them to LEAs only. The first generation Ranger series still had the lLubalox coating. Winchester decided there really want a point to this, and Gen. 2 and Gen 3 Rangers mno longer have the coating.

The Lazzeroni LazerHead Bullets might violate this law. They are coated with Robar's NP3, quoting Robar:

NP3 is Electroless Nickel and TEFLON. The TEFLON is bonded to the particles of Nickel at the molecular level providing self lubrication throughout the entire coating. The Nickel in this finish provides corrosion and abrasion resistance.

Violate what law? Neither Nickel or Teflon is on the banned materials list, which itself only applies to handgun ammunition and not rifle ammo.
