some, but now I believe that speer makes a gdhp specificially for the 2" barrel, supposed to help alot.

from the speer website, the 125 gr gdhp from a 4" barrel
vel 1450 fps (muzzle vel.) energy 583 ftlbs energy from the 2", using the short barreled designed bullet 135 gr bullet vel 990 fps, and 294 ft lbp energy. for reverence, the 124 gr 9mm, non +p gdhp from 4" barrel 1150 fps, and 364 ft lbs. Hope this helps BTW, the 2" version of the GDHP was SPECIFICALLY DEVELOPED for the short barrel to operate correctly, and open correctly. TXL |

Why? Energy is a meaningless measure of a bullets ability to do damage. TxLewis has pointed out two rounds for use from a 2" barrel. The 125 gr. full house load will most likely penetrate less deeply than the far less "powerful" 135. gr. load. Choose the latter, or the 180 gr. Winchester Partition Gold, and you will be fine. Don't worry about energy. Bullet design is far more important than energy levels. |

I say BS.
What the heck do we even have a 357 Magnum for? Why not just shoot a 38? The 125 JHP from a MAGNUM has always been one of the TOP fight stoppers. Why? Cuz its going fast. Sure, bullet design means a lot. But 20 years ago there wasn't a bunch of fancy JHPs out, and the friggin 357 Magnum still worked. Higher energy is part of the formula. |

Are you asking as a prelude to purchasing a 2" .357 J Frame Smith? If so please try before you buy.
They are pretty friggin' frisky to shoot. Especially to attempt to shoot well. The scandium ones are particularly snot flying fun in the recoil department.  +one pull of the trigger = followed by  once the pain subsides. Best to you, Cheesebeast |

If you want lots of recoil, muzzle blast and flash, while gaining nothing over a .38 +P in return, then, by all means go with .357. If you want controllability, easier follow-up shots and good performance, go with a proven winner: the .38 158gr LSWCHP +P.
The Speer round shows promise...the above mentioned load, sometimes referred to the "FBI load" or the "Chicago police load" is a proven performer out of short barrels. |

In past years I have chronographed many different lots of WW and Federal 125gr. magnum loads in revolvers. They generally averaged around 1400-1450fps in 4in. barrels and around 1200-1250fps. in the 2 1/2in. M19/66 guns (There were no "2in." J frame magnums back then, but figures I have seen show them running around 1100-1150 with the same loads today.) These are fearsome loads...on both ends...and no fun to shoot from even some 4in. guns. They work pretty well even in the shorter barrels...cxertainly better than the avergae .38+P 125gr. JHP that clocks at 900fps or less.

I have one, a Taurus 605. I dont know how much energy is lost, but shooting .357 in it isnt fun. I recommend a .38 that is +P rated.
If you insist, shoot it before buying. |

My SW 640 is a fantastic little gun and full house .357's are not to punishing at all out of it. You know something big just happened but its not bad. Good thread, was curious of this myself.
