OK so a agreed to help a "friend" with a S&W that came out of his safe with major rust with pitting on the upper reciever.  I tried to remove the blue and rust with remover but it did not remove all the rust, it just removed the blue and a little rust.

I am thinking of getting somekind of buffer for the dremel tool to see if that will take care of the rust/pitting problem.  Does anyone have advice for me.

He is not willing to take it to a gunsmith since he doesnt really want to keep the handgun anyway and sees no point in spending money on it.

Thanks for any and all advice.

By the way I did not see any "stickys" on this subject with my search

Wire brush and CLP. I would start with a brass brush and move to a steel brush is the brass couldn't shift the rust.

Power tools are nice, but they also make making a mistake faster too. Good luck. BSW

Thanks,
Got the rust out but.......

Pitts still exist.  Is there anything that people are able to fill the pits with?

It is a S&W Chiefs Special 45

If the pits are not that deep you can use wet/dry sandpaper. Start at about 200 grit and work up to 400 or 600. Always go one direction on the steel, and be careful around corners because you will change the angle of them if you are not paying attention. Steal wool is also a option but I use sandpaper for any major work and steel wool to knock minor rust off and such.

That helps a lot.  Thanks
