I can't find the 5906 (tsw) on the Smith & Wesson website anymore. Does anyone know if it's discontinued? Thanks.

Good guns simply couldn't compete at the plastic price point.

Sad but true.
My Gen 1, 2 and 3 Smiths are permanent residents of my gunsafe... It's a dang shame to see them kicked to the curb.
The M&P line is a great gun... but sometimes only a metal frame will do.

Damn. I have a 4006 but had always wanted a 5906. I'll have to keep an eye out for used ones. Thanks everyone.

Wasn't the 4006 the first .40?  I'm with you. Got a 4006.  Someday would like a 5906, 1006 and a 4506 all in my safe to round out the collection.

I believe the 4006 was the first .40 pistol but I'm not positive.

I could kick myself for selling my 5904 10 years ago. At least I still have my 4006...

Lots of used ones out there.  Probably a fair number of new ones still sitting on dealer's shelves.  Hasn't been a real hot seller for several years.

The 4006 was annouced to public as  the first gun to be chambered for the 40S&W when the cartridge was developed, but Glock beat S&W in getting their guns out into the market.

A distributor out of Indiana has some NIB 5906 tactical's on special this month for $549, think it was MDE

The CHP 4006 version is still being made in special runs.  I believe any of the all-steel autos can be made for the right amount of $.

This is the 5906 version:

That's the one I've been trying to find. It may take me a while but I'll get my hands on one. I refuse to transition to polymer handguns as the norm. I'm 41 years old so I'm confident that if I get a few more metal-frame handguns, they'll last me until I die.

For those looking a 5906, I saw this:

http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-wesson-semi-auto-pistols/147640-5906s-319-00-a.html

I picked up a NIB 5906 from CDNN around 2.5 years ago for about $325.  Great shooting gun.

I bought a 4006 right when they came out. It's serial number was 0040. Should have kept it.

Have owned several 3 gen compacts in the 6904 and 6906s.  The 6904 is going back out on the street with me as the new G19 is becoming the bedside gun for the wife.

just checked S&W's website, they no longer show any 3rd gens under the Law Enforcement tab. For some time after they discontinued them for commercial sales they still listed them for LE dept. sales. Wonder if they're still offered to depts yet or if they stopped all production?

A year or so ago CDNN had the last batch of Smith 5906's made. I barely got one before they sold out. IMHO it is the best 9mm Smith ever made

I have 15 of them. I'll see if I can get up a picture. All 15 have been 100% perfect.

Good question. IIRC they are still making 4006es for CHP and a couple of other customers, even though those guns aren't officially listed in their catalog anymore. Perhaps if a department already had a contract for the guns they will still sell them....but you'd have to contact your LE sales rep to find out.

I agree, if a big department were to make a bulk order for gen 3 pistols, smith would restart their production.  However if they would reintroduce it for civilian sales is another story.

I have a 5946 I got from a co-worker.  $280 and in pretty good cond w/3 mags (only holster wear and very little at that) to bad its DA only.... oh well i still like it, trigger pull just takes some getting used to.  I guess I could get another hammer and de-cocker assembly and swap it over but I dont think its really worth it.
