Hello Gents
I have a Model 25-5, 8" barrel that I am thinking about letting go.

Are they really going for $400+
Where is a good place to look for going prices

My Gun Traders Guide lists the 25-5 4" bbl (see no 8"bbl listed) as:

NIB $460,  Ex $370,  Gd $250

Unless it's an early model 25 which is listed as:

NIB $1350,  Ex $1200,  Gd $600

These are both 45LC caliber, may be some help to ya,

Mike

So not a big need for the 8 inchers?
Is it possible to put a 4" barrel on?
Can you change the barrels?

I had the 8 3/8 in barrel changed to a 4 in. for a model 29-2  back about 12 or 15 years ago.

15 years ago it was easier to find gunsmiths that could actually replace revolver barrels correctly.  Most today are incapable of it, simply because there's no call for it and it takes a couple of expensive special tools to do it.  Some of the tools can be model specific too, so that adds to cost if a gunsmith intends to service a couple different types of frames.  The actual work should be withing the capability of anyone who calls themselves a gunsmith, but finding someone equipped to do it is a different story.

If it's a S&W, I'd call Smith and Wesson first.

Today you're usually better of economically to just sell the one with the "wrong" barrel and buy one with the "right" barrel.

Post it for sale on the Smith & Wesson Forums

Ads are cheap in Gun List newspaper, I'd sell it there, IMO.

I've been offered $400 for my 25-5 4" & that was several years ago.
