5906 Finish Redo - AR15.COM

Bought a used and abused 5906 and did it over. New springs, sandpaper, mothers, and a lot of time. I'm happy, but it's not for the purist.

I just used Scotchbrite on mine to bring it back to a factory type finish, but yours looks great to me.

Does Scotchbrite have a negative impact on durability of the finish? I've considered doing this, but I'd hate to have a piece that requires an oil bath for storage.

I doubt it. The 5906 is stainless through and through. Don't try it on one of the alloy guns though.

Yep. The Scotchbrite, and I believe some recommend the blue one, will remove light scuffs and handling marks. You just want to use it in one direction, front to back, not side to side. Definitely don't use it on the anodized alloy frames though.
