I don't want to get my hopes up.

Description appears to be of a rimfire M&P. Should be cool. Hopefully, it's not way undersized like the Walther P22...

Haven't seen or heard any rumors about one.  Would be nice if true.

If it's true and not a POS like the Walther, I will be interested in it.

Still would rather have a 22 conversion.

I would rather have a conversion too.
The only reason I would want one is for inexpensive practice.
And for that I would want my same trigger pull and grip feel.
But since they are offering a complete gun, and not a conversion first, I think it's probably made by umarex or some other company for S&W.

I think that you are right about who will make it.

I was talking to Scott at Apex and I broached the subject of a M&P conversion and he said that they have been exploring the possibility of producing one.

I would be among their first costomers if they do decide to produce a conversion unit.

A conversion would be the cat's ass!
Wish list:
1. Stainless steel inserts at all critical wear points of the (probably aluminum) slide,
2. Hi-cap mags,
3. Standard M&P sight dovetails, set so any sight setup used on the centerfire version could be replicated on the rimfire slide,
4. Adjustable stainless barrel bushing at the front to allow adjusting POI of one's chosen ammo to match POA,
5. Optional 1 in 9" twist, threaded barrel for suppressor use.

I know that's a lot to ask but it would be truly awesome!

Sounds like it'll be made by Walther. MSRP of $420, ETA April 2011.

Lotta cash for a .22 knockoff.

I think a conversion kit would have been a better idea. That way the trigger is 100% the same as the actual big-bore.

I bought a new P22 a few years back. It wouldn't fire 40 % of the time so I sent it back to S&W.

They sent me a brand new pistol  that, wait for it....

...would not fire at all.

Period.

Total pot-metal POS.

I hope not.

I would like to see a conversion on par with Sigs, Advantage Arms or Tactical Solutions.

Aluminum and steel...not pot metal and MIM.

same here

The slide is aluminum & the gun will be made by Walther.

I'm holding out hope that the .22 Lr pistol won't be a piece of crap; I'd really like to own one is they are decently made.
