The Italian guns tend to have better fit and finish for the simple reason that they are able to do things at the plant in Italy that are not possible here...mostly in the area of hand finishing on small things...grip screws lined up nice and pretty, recoil spring ends buffed on a wheel for smoothness, etc. If those things are important to you, the Italian gun is "better" I guess.
If, OTOH, you want a good service pistol that will function reliably at a good price, the US made guns are just fine. Many are built here with the same "level B" finish spec'd by the military, so do not look as pretty as some commercial finished models. Improvements were also introduced here, including the use of solid pins rather than roll pins (clamping sleeves) as done in Italy, and a few other things.
Both are excellent service pistols, but the Italian is prettier to look at. IMO it is not worth a premium over the US gun, you, of course, may feel differently.
