Bought a Tomcat back in '97, loaned it to a good female friend who was in need of personal protection. We lost touch, I forgot about the Tomcat (she was welcome to it) until last week when I received a letter from a PD about 200 miles east of me.
Turns out they had that Tomcat in their evidence locker since *2006* and finally got around to looking for the owner. The Tomcat had been found in a pile of rocks outside a potato-processing plant (of course) and had been there for some time based upon the amount of rust.
Forwarded pics to my local 'smith and he quoted me about $300 to restore it. I've had a hankering to get another Tomcat but it looks like they've been discontinued.
So, should I FO on the restoration or not?
Tomac

If we were in the same state, I'd ask you what you wanted for that beast.  It would be a cool challenge

Break out the naval jelly, dremel buffing bits, and start surfing Numrich for parts.

MRW is correct though.  Unless you want to do it all yourself, it's not worth it (either in restoration quality or in money).

You should find her and ask her how your gun is doing, just to see how she answers.

Wish you lived closer. Been watching those videos on rusty gun restorations and would love a project like that.

I think it's worth fixing, it might not be worth it depending on how much it costs to fix

send it in to beretta! Its worth a shot and I have heard of people getting replacement tomcats for lots of borderline ridiculous reasons besides the frame cracking issue, you never know. If anything they would prob replace it for less than $300.

Do it. I have a 950bs that was in the same shape, with about the same story. I replaced all the corroded parts with used parts found on eBay. There are sellers that post parts kits minus the frame, mostly from police auctions where the frame was destroyed.

That's strange. I checked Cabela's earlier and if you go to their website and select semi-auto handguns, then Beretta, there are only 8 handguns and the Tomcat isn't one of them.

I got mine off VAGuntrader two years ago (used).  Traded a PF-9 that I was trying to sell for $225 (not real popular at the time).  He wanted a 9mm; I wanted a another steel frame Beretta.  Win/win.
I agree though, can't find one new for $300.

Send to someone in a State that does buy backs.  Pay just the FFL fees.  Profit.

Did you read that link?

It's listed for $450.

Edit, sorry Frank, thought you were saying it could be had for $250.

I got curious about whether it was still available, and how much it'd go for.

If it was a .380 or 9mm I'd be tempted.

OP, if it were mine, I would buy a parts set off ebay, rather than try reworking those corroded parts. Here is a link to a parts set on ebay right now for $145.00. Looks like most of what you need minus the magazine. I have no connection with this seller, just the first parts set I found. If you are patient, you might find a set even cheaper.

As a host to see what kind of project skills you have or can develop if you think you might enjoy the time spent , yes , go for it.

As a way to somehow come out ahead dollar wise , not a chance .

Time alone that you will spend you could reload 5 or 10 cases of any ammo

It depends if you can do it yourself. Anyone that says they CAN do it is full of it. There is no way to tell what damage the frame has sustained from corrosion and the stability of the barrel. It would be fun to take apart, but I would never shoot it or trust it, even after redone. Gunbroker has them for $325.00-350.00 all day long. No point in losing a limb/hand for a few hundred dollars, in my opinion.
