.40 has a very snappy recoil... for that reason it is much easier to become proficient at keeping RAPID fire on target...
4 or 5 rounds ON TARGET is going to be MUCH more effectice than 1-2 rounds on target in a heavy recoil weapon. not to mention that practice ammo is MUCH MUCH cheaper... and I am assumming that cost is a factor to you or you would just buy both. |

Custom barrels such as the Bar-Sto will allow you to use a 9mm barrel in a SIG P226 357SIG/40S&W. You can interchange SIG factory 357SIG and 40S&W barrels in a P226 designed for the 357/40. SIG factory and Mec-Gar preban 9mm magazines work fine in my .357SIG P226. Personally, I prefer the 357SIG over the 40S&W.

I have a Sig-Pro in .40 and a 226 in 9mm. I prefer the sigpro .40 JMHO

I have had several makes of pistols in .40 and have sold every one.
I have a 226 in 9mm and its one of the best pistols I have ever owned. A good pistol (226) matched with good defensive 9mm+p ammo will take care of most any defensive need you will have. I used to have 6 or 7 different calibers for pistols and I decided that was too many mouths to feed and all were starving for attention due to lack of funds to feed them all. I have narrowed my calibers down two my two favorites.....9mm and .45 I still have several pistols but they are in these two calibers. So basically, after all that hoopla, buy the 226 in 9mm.

I think 226 40 with replacement 9mm barrel is what everyone seems to be saying indirectly

I would go with a 357 sig over the 9 or 40 .

357 sig is a more expensive round and if you get a 40 cal you can simply change the barrel
the availability of the ammo is also poor |

I agree with Spectre ... had sig pro in 40 , sig 239 in 40 , S&W 4006 in 40 , hated them all couldn't shoot them worth squat , got my BHP back , shoots perfect , my 1911's same , my super 226 , is the best shooting pistol i have ever owned ....I despise 40's .....I keep my stuff simple 22lr , 9mm , and 45 acp ...

My reasoning is similar to Spectre's, get the 9mm. If you later decide that you really want/need more stopping power, sell me the 9mm and get 45.

9mm ammo at wallyworld is 10c per round. Practice twice as often for the same amount of money. Stopping power wont be an issue, because you will be able to hit someone in the eye with that gun. .40 and .357sig are solutions to percieved problems. Plus, there are tons of highcap factory mags for P226 pmm out there.
The barsto conversion barrel requires gunsmithing to work relibaly and costs about $200. You are bettter off getting the 9mm in the first place, and spending that money on holsters, night sights, ammo and mags. |

true its all about shot placement
plus the +p 9m is just as effective as the 40 or 45 with only 3 to 5 %difference in fuller scale would rather have a 9 with 15 rds than a 40 or 45 with 12 or 8 rds also the kick from 40 and 45s decreases follow up 8 rds of 45 maybe enough for one on one but not 5 on 1 with bullets flying around you want as many rds as possible

Could someone explain this? I thought the only difference was the shorter length of the 229 grip. Do they differ in circunference? |

I didnt measure the diameter but to me the 226 fits my hands better
