Where can I find out how old my Sig 220 is?  The first four of the serial is G 264.

[#1]
There might be a date code inside the grips (on the grips, not the frame). Arrow pointing at month, two digits for year.

SiG date codes are stamped 2 letter codes.  Underside of the slide at the muzzle end next to the proof marks.  Here is my P228, it was made in 1997.

The letters decode as follows:

A = 0
B = 1
C = 2
D = 3
E = 4
F = 5
G = 6
H = 7
J = 8
K = 9

If yours does not have it stamped as shown, SiG customer service can tell you over the phone by doing a serial number/batch search of their data archive.

This.  Always call the manufacturer when you have a question like this.  They can usually tell you in about five minutes.

Not to hijack, but now I have a follow-on question.

What is that thing that looks like a cockroach?  A proofmark, I understand.  But what exactly does the cockroach signify?

Does that mean it passed the bug shooting test?
Link Posted: 10/3/2008 1:05:43 AM EDT
[Last Edit: Growler67] [#5]
It's not a roach.  It is the proof mark identifying the Kiel, Germany proofhouse where the parts undergo inspection before moving on to assembly.  Proof Marks
Link Posted: 10/3/2008 8:36:14 AM EDT
[#6]
The "roach" is the Coat of Arms of the city Kiel

The Proof Marks-link posted by Growler is full of errors.

The Coat of Arms on your P6 indicates that it was testet by the Kiel proof house, the Federal Eagle over the N is the proof stamp for nitro powder.

That only works if your Sig has the proof marks...3 of my 7 do not.

Also, Sig wants $25 to tell you how old your pistol is...

Actually, SIG only charges $12.95 to tell you when your SIG was made. They also mail you a Certificate of Manufacture. Call SIG Customer Service to order yours. You will need to know the model number (e.g., P226) and the serial number of the weapon to order this certificate.

Thats a pretty neat.   My P220 was produced in 1990 and still has made in W. Germany marked on the slide.

It should be on the outside of the bottom of the slide, the area that extends beyond the dust cover of the frame.  Sorry for the crappy pic but it was the best I could do in a hurry.

Your's is probably an American assembled Sig.  There are no proof marks on them.

Parts are made in batches and later assembled from those parts.  Many slides were made prior to the reunification of Germany.  After the reunification, SiG used parts in stock with the stampings and proofmarks from older stock until it ran out before using newer stocks of parts.

In addition to the previously posted method, you can try looking on the inside of the grip panels for a date stamp.  It'll look like a clock of sorts.

SiGArms chargers $12.95 for a date investigation.  You can get a more detailed history for a slightly higher fee, providing there is a history beyond just manufacture (LE Department sale, factory services completed, CPO etc.).

You are confused because SiG doesn't incorporate the Date Code in the Serial Number.  If it was assembled in Exeter, then you may end up having to pay SiG $12.95 for a manufacture Certificate to show when it was made.  If it came with a plastic case, the manufacture date will be on one of the stickers on the side.  SiG no longer uses the "Roll Stamp" two letter Date Code (though they really should).  When they did, the two letters would be stamped on the frame just above the trigger guard on the right side of the frame for P230/P232's.  For the classic "P" series they were mostly on the "chin" of the slide.  Front end, directly opposite from the front sight (yes, underside).

It probably says' "frame made in Germany" , the gun was assembled in the USA.

My 229 was bought back in 1997 or so but I can't find any markings like you all are talking about.  Does this mean I have bin carrying a fake SIG all these years?

To the OP, my 220 was ordered new from Simmons Gun Specialties in 1996 and my serial # starts with G 263.  Not as much help as the other posts but perhaps it can ballpark it for you, granted ship date from a distributor likely doesn't mean much.

Mine was made in June of 2001 according to the grip panels.  I have no stampings to go by.  It says Made in Germany, not Frame Made in Germany.  I guess they make the mags faster than the guns, because the mags were made in 2000 according to the date clock.
Awesome gun!!!!!!!

mine doesnt have those marks....its got the proof marks, but no letters. it does say 04/83 on the side of the slide though, just in front of the chamber.

Also, Sig wants $25 to tell you how old your pistol is...

Is the info really that hard to come by?  Only Sig can tell you after you pay them how old your gun is?  How does a dealer find out what he has?  That info has to be somewhere.  Wouldn't it be in some blue book of values or something? How can almost every other firearm made be dated by doing a quick web search and a Sig can't?

Jan or Feb of 2005. At least that is when the grips were made. This should give you an idea of when the rest of the gun was made as well.

only to those who have them...many feel the Made in Germany (including the West German made ones) are superior...I will only go so far as to say there were less complaints back then but SiG didn't make so many varieties of the same pistol as they do today...enjoy whatever you have and if yours works...then it's fine...
