They are both great guns, I would say for all around use the 229, small enough for conceal carry and still big enough for a decent range gun. As far as ammo, each has to make their own choice, I personally like .40 for the combo of ballistics and mag capacity, but that’s just me, everyone has their own preference and reasoning for it.

I carry a 229 40. With CT laser grips. Really happy with it so far. Need a good holster, and a really good belt.

Sig P229 in .40 with the option of changing barrels and shooting .357Sig makes it a sweet package. I sitll cant tell which round mine shoots better, its dead nuts accurate with both. My P228 (9mm) is also a great shooter, and both are good CCW pistols. I'd only get a P226 if I already had a P229 or P228. There really isn't much a P226 will do that a P229 won't do just as well.

None of the above. I personally would go with a 220 from the late '90s unless you want more capacity. The gun has a thinner grip, is lighter than a 229, and is still easy to conceal if you carry it in a Milt Sparks VMII. MJD

I would go 220 if you want full size, and 228 if you want 9mm. I shoot my 228 as well as the 226, and the 228 is far better balanced than the 229 for 9mm. The 229 in .40 is one of the best .40s out there.

I voted for the 226 because of all the mags and holsters that seem to be every where for them. I have a 220st though and it has been a nice pistol for me. I wish I could shoot it better.

The only SIG I would consider buying is the P220 SAO or (if they ever offer it) P226 SAO.

While I like my P229 in .40 I dont think you'd be disappointed with any of those choices.
If I bought a Sig right now though it would be a P220 .45. |

+1 ..and Very Nice to shoot. Unless you will use it A LOT for practice.. then a 9mm for Low Cost practice ammo. |

The 226 in 9mm is a great gun.
Even better is a 228.

I prefer the 239 because it fits me better, but the 229 would be my next choice. Good fit, good overall size, good capacity, and a great gun. Might need some work on the grip panel where your thumb joint rests. I took my 229 to a two-day pistol class at Blackwater and some flash where the grip panel texturing ends rubbed the skin off and then some.
Other than that, great gun. I wouldn't sneeze at a DAK, either. I've played with three of them (dry fire only) and the trigger is very nice. Smooth and fairly light for a DA. Good luck! |

My Sig P229 in .40 is by far my favorite of the handguns I've owned. I will never sell it....

I voted for the P229 in 9mm. I own several sig models, and the one that I like the most is the P229. As for the caliber goes, you can get cheap 9mm ammo everywhere. That´s a lot of range time......

You can't go wrong with either as others have said. I like the 226, but went with a 229 .40 since I already had a 228. This way I could use the same holsters. Just picked up a 229R .40 last week. With CTR grips, it's my favorite; love it
 Sig P229R w/ CTR Btw, I don't hate Glocks, just don't like the feel. I went with XD's. Still, nothing like Sigs. |

I picked the p229 in .40
Personally i would buy another p220st. i dont have real big hands and the single stack 45 with hogue grips fits REAL GOOD. you wont be sorry you bought a SIG i love it even though I;m planning on buying a kimber tactical this summer. |

you haven't really been listening have you? i've been considering a Sig myself and after shooting one at my local range posted some questions about issues with its reliability. just like HK and Glock the replies were a mixed bag of love it or hate it. coincidentally, i was just at my local gun shop today and they had a 228 for $639(NIB). it took every ounce of willpower i had to walk out before i spent next month's mortgage payment. |
