I was just wondering, how's the SiG P229 in 9mm? How does it shoot? Is it smooth? Accurate? Reliable? Good 9mm handgun? Would you recommend it?

The P229 in 9MM is a superb handgun.

However, it’s a bit overbuilt for the caliber.

I much prefer the P228, which is just a smidgen lighter and less chunky.  Granted, the P228 is an older design that has a somewhat rust-prone slide and roll pins in the slide that can sometimes start to walk out on you.

Note that with either, you will probably find the DA/SA action to be a bit challenging in DA mode.

i was wondering the same thing. in a month i will be ordering a CPO sig p229 in 9mm from oridinanceoutsellers.com. they have the 229 listed as $485 with $15 shipping.... soo check it out.

i cant wait to place my order

P229 is an excellent handgun.  Highly suggest getting it in either .40sw or .357sig, as those are the calibers it was designed for.  A 9mm conversion for a .40/.357 gun is possible, but you can't take a 9mm gun and go up in caliber.  For a gun the same size as a P229, in 9mm, the P228 is perfect.  Mine doesn't have any rust, because its nickle plated on the slide.  My P228 is older, and the mainspring is very stiff, my DA pull is around 12lbs.  My P229 on the other hand is more like 10lbs, and a lot smoother.

but if i order in 40 cal i can swap out to make it a 9mm?

how much would it cost (ball park figure) for the barrel and mag?

The 229 is a good platform for 9mm because it is over-engineered.  It isn't going to have the problems of a 228 and can handle +P loads for longer than a 228 will, IMO.

Not IMO, a 40/357 to 9mm Bar-sto barrel runs about $200 or $250, it's been a while since I checked.  SIG does not offer a 40/357 to 9 barrel.  My concern in the conversion is the magazine issue.  My 40/357 mags won't fit the well on my 9mm 229.  I think (no experience yet) that the 9mm mags may be too loose in the 40/357.  My concern would be poor feeding.  The same thing could be an issue with feeding 9mm out of the slightly larger mags.  Maybe there is a follower that helps with that?

I have both 229 9mm and a 229 40/357. The 229 9mm mags fit and feed fine in the 229 40/357. I would not count on that combo in a gun fight, but for the range It's fine. I bought the 229 9mm before I found out there was a 229 40/357 available. Otherwise I would have purchase the 229 40/357 and got a 9mm conversion barrel.

This might get boring or confusing.
If you look at the 229 9mm mags, and the 229 40/357 mags the lips are the same size, the bodys are fatter on the 40/357.
On the other hand, the 226 9mm mags are identical in size except for the lips. The 9's won't stay in the 40/357 mags, so you can't load in 17 rounds. Both caliber mags fit and lock tight. in the 229 n40/357

I bought a CPO 229R in 9mm last summer and it is the sweetest shooting pistol I have ever used.  It is just as accurate if not more so than my 226 in 9mm.  The heavier stainless steel slide helps reduce felt recoil making rapid and accurate follow-up shots much easier.  My 226 is much older with a stamped slide.

Go for it and have fun with your 229.

+1 on the 229 in 9mm... I had one but it was pre-rail. I sold it planning on buying a 229R in 9mm but ended up grabbin' a Homeland Security P229R DAK in .40 first. I still plan on buying a P229R DAK 9mm later on. Will probably order a Sig .357Sig barrel for the Homeland Security gun, too.

But yeah, the P229 9mm I had was super sweet. Highly recommended if you're looking for a bullet proof 9mm package. Mine was needle tip accurate and smooth cycling. Man, I miss that gun. Will enjoy the DAK version more though. I absolutely LOVE the DAK trigger system.

In my 229 40sw I use a 9mm mag as my backup mag and it fits/lockesup/feed/cycles perfect I have put well over 1000 rounds through that 9mm mag and it works for 40 excellant.

The security at the British Embassy here in Kabul use 9mm P229s among other weapons.  They think very highly of the SIGs.
