I like them both but I prefer the .40 cal, I have a G27 and plan on getting a G23 soon.
The .40 has 95% of the kinetic energy a .45 has and allows for more capacity. The .40 is a great compromise between the 9mm and .45, both proven calibers. Like you know, shot placement is everything. But it doesn't hurt you to have some knockdown power in your pistol. I carry a G27 because I believe in the theory, "carry the biggest gun you can conceal in the biggest round you can handle." If it is going to be your primary defensive handgun, I would say go with the .40!! |

Man just go ahead and and get a Glock 45, either the 21, 36 or 30, you can get 45 ammo really cheap, walmart has the 100rnd value packs for $10.00 to $15.00 a box also I have seen bulk buys really cheap.

If it's going to be primarily a self defense/carry gun .40 is probably a better round (though i don't own one
 I only have 9s and 45s) If it's mainly a range gun then I'd get a 9mm. With the new JHP rounds that are more likely to expand than the older JHPs I don't think you should loose a lot of sleep over carrying a 9, particularly if youare going to practice with it more than you would with a 40

you need to figure out what sort of application this gun will be used in and then determine what caliber will best suit it.

Since I belive that PRACTICE and TRAINING are the absolute KEY to winning a gunfight I would opt for the 9mm for the reason you stated. Ammo is plentiful and cheap.... so cheap in fact that few people even seem to reload it strictly for the purposes of saving money.
And I am assuming that cost is a factor for you or you would not have put this post up... if ammo cost were not a factor you would be buying both. I know that .40 cal ammo from wally world is ALMOST as cheap as 9mm, but hey... 3-5$ a box is just that much more 9mm ammo I can buy.  |

Plus a 40cal has a lot more kick then a 9mm. For me I carry the Glock19. I have a 15 round clip for it. I use 115gr Corbon hollow points. The faster the Hollow Point the more it will expand.

I totally disagree. I have shot the G26 side by side with the G27, both loaded with Federal Hydra-Shoks. There was no noticeable difference in recoil whatsoever. I was with my brothers and my dad and we all agreed. Recoil should not be an issue in deciding between the two. Every person I have spoken to concerning the "recoil" issue, who has done any kind of recoil comparison has agreed. BTW, do you have a 15 round clip or a 15 round mag? I thought the G19 used mags. |

I disagree. A had a G-27 and my wife has a G-26. The recoil is noticable. Also the weight of the loaded 26&27 is a little different. Now we both have 26's

No... I use factory ammo only. You cant really reload 9mm as cheap as you can buy it at wally world. It would take YEARS to make up the just the cost of the equipment. |

What ammo were you using in the two guns? Different loads will make a difference. I have to wonder if the +P stuff would have made the G26 recoil more than my 27... |

I feel the same way. The .40S&W Glocks have a strange kind of "spike" in the recoil. That's how most of the guys at the range I go to would describe it also. I have a 17 and it's fun, effortless and cheap to shoot. I would recommend a 9mm to start with for the very reason that you could easily sell it for the same price you could pick up a used .40 Glock if you aren't satisfied. |

My G23 has a short and abrupt recoil. Very manageable.
My G17 has a quicker and less forceful recoil. Cheaper ammo hopefully means you'll shoot more and increase your proficiency with your carry weapon. I CCW my G17 over the 26 or 23 because i'm much more confident AFA accuracy goes. I've never shot my G23 very well, but Mrs. HS1 is impressive with it. Consequently it's now hers. HS1 |

Of course you can get both... practice with the 9 for cheaper ammo, but carry the .40... will fit many of the same holsters... and as far as recoil being more/less/about the same, I guess you would have to shoot it for yourself and see..... how it feels in my hand, his hand, or her hand is not necessarily the same as it will feel in YOUR hand.

Must be nice... I have done some research locally here... by the time I get the powder, equipment, pay hazmat fees, etc.... its not really worth it to me when I can get 1000 rounds from walmart for a hundred bucks or so. My daughter loves picking up the brass for some reason... she keeps my closet STOCKED with 1-time used brass. Not that I will ever do anything with it, but she thinks she is helping... so I let her. I will probably just give it to someone who can use it. |

i made the switch from 9 to 40 a while ago. it didn't slow me down with the larger guns, but the g26 to g27 was a different story. double taps got slowed WAY down. corbon 115 in the 9 and 135 in the 40. of course, after reading some of the links out of the ammo oracle, i'm not sure the corbon 9s would break the skin coming from a 3.5" barrell. fuck marshall and sanow.

Get a 19 and a few cases of ball. Shoot the hell out of it until you get really, really good.
Then trade it in for a 29.

Buy the G22 and pick up a 9mm barrel. I have both a 9mm and .357sig barrel for my 22 and 27.

I think the G17 offers the shooter a very controlled shooting experience with light recoil, excellent ergonomics, and hi ammo capacity. I'm very accurate with my G17 and would choose a full sized 9mm Glock handgun over a 40 anyday. I can put a full mag of 9mm right on target, I find the 40 to kick a heck of a lot more.

9mm is real popular, but the FBI spent quite of bit of cash in research and made the switch from 9mm to 10mm to 40 to get better stopping power and then a smaller package.

+1. 9mm FMJs will run about $100/1000, .40 FMJs about $160/1000 from the big internet ammo distributors. Practice, practice, practice then carry a good bonded JHP (Speer Gold Dot or Winchester Ranger). If you can consistently hit center mass, 9mm isn't much of a handicap (Not as much as 60% less practice, anyway). |

I'm very fond of the Glock 17. No kB issues with the 9mm. No Phase III malfunctions with the 17.

9mm IS cheaper and more plentiful; load to +p and its on par with .40SW i read somewhere once where a .45acp, .357sig, 9mm, and .40SW were all test fired through a car windshield and hood--all but the .40sw went through to strike a dummy in the car seat; the .40 just made " a knuckel sized dent" in the hood or something like that besides, you got 17 rnds in a mag; just shoot the bad guy again and again and again and again and again and....... |

go with a g18 who cares about the .40's stopping power when you have a 33 rnd. bullet hose.
seriously get a 17, if you dont like it just buy a few .40 mags and a barrel. that way you get both for roughly $650. |
