I personally stick to Hydra-Shok 165 grains in my 40. (Glock 22) I like the weight/velocity trade off. Also, I always bought 165 grain PMC FMJs for practice so I figured to stick with the same bullet weight. (Which would be OK except the load doesn't necessarily equate eachother as the Hydra-Shoks feel a lot more tame compared to the PMCs)
Having granted grace to several deer and an elk, an injured angus bull, a charging Rotweiler, a sick Rotweiler, skunks, coons, rattle snake, prairie dogs, etc. etc. the round has proven to me to be effective, reliable, and equally important- ACCURATE. YMMV. Sly |

I've only fired two different loads of defense HP in .40cal. That would be Remmington Golden Sabre and Speer Gold Dot. Of the two I'd definately choose Gold Dot because in two different Glocks( models 22 and 27) the Golden Sabre had 5 stoppages(total between the 2 pistols) whereas the Gold Dot had none.
I was not impressed at all with Remmington's quality control...While in the police academy the instructors emptied the boxes of Rem Golden Sabre into a large box and the class had to load our mags from the pile of ammo. During the loading we found 3 rounds that had offset primers and there was 1 round that had no powder charge at all!! 4 rounds in a case of 500 that were defective is just piss poor QC IMO!! Damn shame that the county I worked for made us carry that round because it was $4 cheaper by the case than Gold Dot!!  |

I carry gold dots in my 27 b/c in tests the dots tend to mushroom more than federals.

I definitely stick with the Gold Dots. I do jump between the 155 and 165 ammo though. I started with the one 155s but decided to go with a little more weight. The Gold Dots have been reliable and accurate through my G22 and G27.

Gold Dot 165's in my 27 and Cor-Bon 135's in my 35.
155gr Silver Tips are my "old reliable" and work great in both pistols. |

So is the Gold Dot at ammoman.com a good deal? Is that first quality ammo? A stock ? I am going to buy a bunch and gold dot is darn cheap. Whats that no jacket to seperate mean?

The jacket of the bullet is bonded to the led bullet. It is almost like plateing the bullet. The bullet and the jacket do not separate on contact or during penetration, it also helps with controld expansion. Check out speer-ammo.com.

1000rds of Speer Gold Dot 180gr 40S&W ordered. Thanks for your opinions, the tests do show that it mushrooms very well and since I know it feeds fine in my Glocks, I will use this 1000rds for the practice ammo and will go pick up some retail box Gold Dot 180gr to load in my carry mags.

Why were you flamed? I know they had some QA/QC issues (almost 10 years ago) and there was some counterfeit Cor-Bon circulating for a while, but everythings been great for a long time now. With that particular 135gr load (my personal favorite), we're talking .357 Magunum terminal ballistics. Damn right the bad guy won't like it! |

I have corbon 165's in my G27 and G22.
But I've noticed the jacket sheds pretty consistantly in just a water jug. I'm going to switch to Gold Dots a soon as I get around to it. |

I was told there's newer, better ammo out there nowadays! It probably had more to do with the fact I have some Olys, C-More sights, Glock C guns & customized Glocks! Probably not, but you never know. I'll still use Cor-Bon and the rest of my gear w/o any shame or fear! teamroper2004 |

I shoot the Cor-Bon 135's out of both my 23 and 27, never had any issues. The trade of in weight/vel is one consideration. Box says 1300FPS. It's what I always used, never really tried any other brand. When I used to carry a Colt, I took out about 10 different brands and did expansion checks on them all. The old Black Talon was the most damaging, but the Cor-Bon in .45 was quite impressive to, so when I transfered to .40 I stuck with the Cor-Bon.

At work and at home I use Speer GDHP 165gr rounds. At work we carry the G22 and out of work I carry a G23. I like the Cor Bon and Triton 135gr jhp rounds too. JMTCW....Trapfan

135 gr corbon saved my buddy's life. i got second hand from the guy who did the autopsy, that my friend's double tap did more internal damage than any other handgun wound he'd ever seen. dropped a hopped up perp before he hit the ground.

 You might want to do some reading to learn a bit about how handgun bullets work, and why. Energy, while certainly a factor, is far from being near the top of importance. The Ammo Oracle focuses mostly on ARs and 5.56, but bullet wound basics are covered pretty well, and there are plenty of links to read more handgun-specific stuff. -Troy |

Interesting thing I heard about ammo the other day. Heard it from a source I consider to be reliable, though I can not say that this is 100%. What I heard is that the 50 round boxes that are typically sold to LEO/LEA have a much stricter QC than the 20/25 round consumer boxes. Specifically I heard that the 20/25 round boxes can have upto a 5% failure rate in the lot and still be green lighted where as the 50 round boxes have to have no misfires in the lot. Don't know for sure, but makes it easier to spend a little extra on the Ranger T's. Chris |
