So I always thought the "SF" stood for "Slim Frame" but I recently saw a few posts indicating that it actually stands for "Short Frame." What exactly is "short" about the frame? Is the grip short from front to back? Top to bottom? Left to right?

Shorter from front to back, specifically in the "hump" area.

yep, turn an SF and a reg 21 upside down and look in the backstrap hole.  You will see a pretty big difference.

Yup!
With that said it should be "slim frame" because when talking about "short" folks usually understand it as up and down/heigth. "Slim" is front to back or width/circumference.....don't know what Glock was thinking.
