I Would get the that you like, both are great pistols .. I have the G-34 and i have no use for the 17L ..
I love my G-34 i carry it from time to time..

Range only vs. comp/carry/tac.
The 17L is too large for IDPA. |

Get the 34, it will do everything the 17L will and is legal for competition if you want.

17L is longer and discontinued so I'd get that one if you dont plan to use it for competition.

Depends on the competition type though.
Some have to be current production pistols, or at least XXX number of pistols made, which you'd have to research for the 17L It will also NOT fit in the IDPA box. |

No discontinued, according to what I was told by the instructor in Glock Armorer School. Glock makes the 17L's in small runs every few years. I've seen a few NIB at gun shows this year. |

Had a 17L...nice gun...but I much prefer the G34 for practical use now. I sold that G17L and have never regretted it although it earned me much more than I ever paid fpr it in competitions...probably at least $3000 or more.
