Went to the gun show in Phx today, came home with a Gen 3 G17.  I have a G26 and G19 both Gen 3s, I've been wanting a 17 for a while and I thought I might try a Gen 4 but after I got there and was able to handle both the Gen 3 and Gen 4 side by side I still liked the Gen 3 more.  Of course it was cheaper too!

Nice addition to the family.

I agree.  Gen 4 does nothing for me.

I'm still a Gen3 guy.  Any advantage in the Gen4 grip is wasted on me because I loathe the finger grooves and always do my own grip work.

Now you just need a 34 and a 17L.

I have 9 Glocks and only 2 are 4th Gen.  Both 19's.  I do like the mag releases better and the grip is better when your hands are wet.  Other than that Gen 3's are excellent.

I really prefer the Gen4 to the 3 but whatever suits you better is what's better. I want a 17 in the near future but I just got a 34.

It's funny how some people like the g3 and some like the 4s. I personally like the 4. I have a 17,21,30s in gen3 but don't like how my thumb can't reach the mag release without shifting my grip. I sold the 17 and someday I'll get rid of the others. I have 2 19 g4 that I love.
So what is it that you like so much more with the g3? Maybe it will make me appreciate those 3s more.

Congrats... I am pro-Gen4 but I own 2 and 3s as well.  My next will be a 34.4 or 17.4.

Everything I've got is Gen3 and 45acp. Thinking on 9mm in the near future but I will likely still buy Gen 3.

I can't really say exactly what it is that I like "so much" better.  I know I like the grip texture of the G3's better, plus I like to do a little light stippling and the G4 texture would not lend itself to that.  I have also heard that the Gen 4 slide finish is not as tough as the older versions...could be a load of crap but I did consider it.

I think mainly it is just that I am a creature of habit, I like the Gen 3's and I like the idea of all my Glocks being the same.  I might even have been a little afraid that I would like the Gen 4 better and then not be as happy with my Gen 3's.

Nuthin wrong with a Gen3 at all.  I'm a Gen4 guy, but I just bought a Gen3 frame today to complete a mix-master 34 to keep my mix-master Gen3 17 company.  The Gen3s inarguably have a better trigger.

Gen 4's have much better ergo's and a better RSA. 3 is still GTG

Just picked up another gen 3 myself.

Vickers RTF 2 FDE 17, have the 19 version.

For me the Gen 3 RTF2 models are where it is at in a Glock. Fit my hands like a glove. No need for stippling.

Gen 4 with medium back strap just does not feel the same as the Gen 3's to me.

Man so many people raise hell about the finger grooves on their Glocks, guess I'm one of the lucky few who don't get bothered by it.

As far as gen 3 vs gen 4 for me, I choose gen 4 for the mag release and the texture. It's nice to know I don't have to stipple and modify my gun, as those things tend to hurt resale.

I feel like other members have echoed the sentiment that the gen 4 was more accurate

Ive got a G19 gen4, G17 gen3, and a G34 gen3.
I like the gen3 better, except for the gen3 mag release.
I think the gen3 have the ability to refine the trigger better than gen4.

As far as trigger grooves, I like them as long as the trigger guard is undercut. My fingers fit fine, especially when stippled and refined.

I bought a Gen3 G34 at s really good price...and new.

I'm still getting used to it. My others are a Gen4 17 and 19.

The biggest adjustment is the smaller mag release.

I have a Gen4 19 and feel spoiled when it comes to the mag release.  After picking up a friends Gen3 and realizing how shitty the mag release was, I really have no desire to ever go back a generation.

I prefer the Gen4 mag release. It works a lot better for me than the Gen3. The slight grip reduction actually makes a difference for me, and I do like the texture of the Gen4.

Gen3 is classic, though.

I just picked up a Gen 3 19 over the weekend. Being a lefty, I gain no advantage over the enlarged mag release.  I still have to shift my grip with either a Gen 4 or Gen 3. I have too many years of muscle memory to switch the release to the right side.

G3 & G4 are the same price for me.

I buy Gen4 for the better grip texture, slightly smaller grip and much improved magazine release.

I've only fondled gen IV's.  I feel like they have the potential to not need some kind of extra texture to work.  Which seems like a good thing.  In the summer, Gen III's stay put.  But when it's colder, they become too slippy in my hands.  And I suppose if I was super sweating in the summer, it might not work either.  But I've yet to fire a Gen IV to see if it WOULD stay put better.

I don't own a Glock so I don't know the difference between Gen 3 and Gen 4.  Please explain for me if you don't mind.

Also, I've read that the Glock 42 is quite a good concealed carry and self defense gun even though it's "just" a ..380 caliber.  Everyone says it has a great trigger and shoots very well.    I'm considering a 42 as well as the usual 9 mm S&W M&P Shield and possibly a Springfield XD S 9.

I've also read and seen videos that some of the new .380 ammo is quite effective at deterring or stopping ordinary street criminals and close up street assaults and robberies, etc.    Is this true?  As  good or as good enough as 9mm?  I've never been shot or shot anybody, so I don't really know, except that I know that I don't want  to get shot or have to shoot anyone unless it's absolutely necessary.

Thanks for your time and thoughts.

There will be others on here who can explain better but here is what I know...

The Gen 3 vs Gen 4...on the 4 they changed the grip size (very slightly smaller) and texture on the grip and now they include various size backstraps so a shooter can help make the grip fit their hand better.  They also enlarged the magazine release and made it so it can be moved to either side of the gun.  Internally they changed from a single recoil spring to a double style spring that is supposed to help mitigate recoil even more.  Also the Gen 4 comes with 3 mags instead of 2 like the Gen 3.

As for the G42 I can't say as I have never shot one.  I did get to check them out at the gun show this weekend and I would consider the G43 (New single stack 9mm) if it were me, but I have not shot one of those either.  The size was nearly the same and 9mm > .380 IMO.

I have short, stubby fingers and large palms.  The GEN4s feel a LOT nicer to me, and I prefer the mag-release.
--
As for the .380, I think most of the new ammo is plenty for UP CLOSE stuff, since shot placement is most important really.  The G42 is the softest shooting polymer .380 there is--it's sooo soft, it's like a .22LR shooting hypervelocity ammo.
With a +2 TTI mag-base, you'd have 9rds of .380.  I upgraded to the G43, but for 95% of situations, I think the G42 is just as good...though ammo costs more (practice and defense).  I liked to keep a LeHigh in the barrel and FTX rounds in the mag.

I much prefer the Gen 4.

I can't wait till Glock stops making the gen3's

I've got a gen 2.5 G30, and a gen3 19c..... everything else is a gen4 (to many to list).

I still like the Gen 3s but I haven't shot a Gen 4 so I don't know if I'd like it more than the Gen 3 or not. I don't have any problems with the finger grooves either. I'm a lefty but at this point there's no way I would change the mag release button to the other side, so that feature on the Gen 4 is useless to me.
