I currently own a G19, my one and only auto-pistol. I've been very happy with it and shoot some gun games with it and it does well for me. I like the price of 9mm ammo, either reloaded or store bought, and like the capacity of my 19. That being said: I need help talking me out of a G21. All I ever hear is how much people like them (accurate, soft shooting 45, their best shooting Glock, etc) and I need to hear all the downsides. I've been eyeballing one and I'm afraid I'm not going to be able to say no much longer.

The downsides are ammo cost and it's a little too big.  I have large hands, but the G21 is just a little bigger than I prefer.

Get yourself a G21sf.

Had one and sold it after one range trip.
Was just to wide of a grip, didn't like it at all.
I'm sure a sf or gen4 would be better

Agree with the comment above. The G21 SF is a great firearm and one i would like to add to my collection. My brother curently has one and I really enjoy shooting it plus i am able to find .45 pretty easily.

This may be counterproductive, but you should buy a Gen 4.  You'll be happy you did!

Since you wanted to be talked out of it, I'll try.

Don't get a G21, because you could get one of these:

The grip is big, mainly use my G21 for suppressed fun, as Kriss 30rd mags are a blast.

Shooting cast reloads (wolf barrel) so Im shooting for less than .22lr prices these days.

+1 on a Gen 4.  The SF was a major step up from the GIANT 21 grip, but you would be very happy with a Gen4.

Also look at the 36.  Very comfy in the hand and still decent capacity.

21 SF was my duty gun when I was a cop, it is still my favorite .45, and I have a lot of them. Ammo cost is the only downside. This would be the one gun I would keep if I could only have one handgun.

I tried out a Gen 4 G21 the other day.

It shot nice and I really liked the gun.
When I was thinking of what I would use it for, I have other guns that are better suited for hunting, self defense and competition so I passed on it because it would probably just become a safe queen.

If I had a place to shoot bowling pin competitions, then I could justify it.

I vote for G21 Gen4.

They are a bit large in the hand and buying ammo sucks but it is just a fun cartridge to shoot. And yes they are very accurate. Interestingly Massad Ayoob has said the most accuracy he has achieved with a Glock was with the G30  I've taken my G21 Gen4 to a few training classes, it's almost boring how reliable it was.

I have a 21 Gen 4 and a 30S.  Get a 30S.  Perfectly balanced, and can use 21 mags.  Doesn't feel too big, it feels just right.  You can find one if you look around.  Took me a few weeks until I found one at buds.  If you buy a 30S and don't like it, I'll trade you for my 21.  :o)

Blasphemy!

I'm getting a RTF2 NiBX that will house a factory GLOCK 21 threaded barrel that will also work on my suppressor that I just paid for today (so I'll be photographing it in August or September next year)....

We need pics when the gun follows you home.

I have had a G21 for years and have nothing bad to say about it and a lot of good. It is *simple*, reliable, and reasonably accurate. It's comfortable in my hands and shoots well. Recoil is reasonable and there is no need to baby it. I have not tried the SF (slim frame) but I do not doubt it is a great gun too. BTW, I have a G17, G19, G21, and G27 and I shoot them all. I prefer the G21, not because of  any strong personal feelings on caliber, but because it's what I am most comfortable with. I have a half dozen 33rd mags that fit the G17 and the G19, so it is pretty convenient to take them already loaded to the range along with their factory mags. I can shoot 200 rds without reloading. That's convenient for sure but I still like the G21 best.

I know you did not ask about other guns but I got a .22lr Buck Mark and hands down it is the best out-of-the-box pistol I have ever bought. Cheap to shoot, feels superb in the hands, and it's a tackdriver. The only thing I don't like is that the owner's manual says to not tear it down all the way for cleaning.

I've had a Gen 2 for years. It will reliably shoot pine cones out of trees (don't panic - taking the Jeeps way out in the mountains of Cali). Fits my hands great. I did remove the adjustable rear sight because I did not like how it could get caught on things. It is my "plan A" gun. Stop thinking and go for it.

Can't help you buddy, it is not only my favorite handgun I own, but my favorite firearm I own overall. It's been on my hip every day since I bought it, and comes to every range session with me. At is point, I'm saving up to buy another, gonna go with a gen 4 this time

Never caused an issue, been shot by me, and 4 brand new to shooting female shooters

I'll give the unfiltered unbiased opinion of a non-Glock person.

The only Glock I liked to shoot was a G20.  The owner was lucky if he got a one foot pattern at 20 yards.
I was shooting golf ball sized groups.  Recoil wasn't bad.  Trigger was crap because some people shouldn't work on their own guns.
I could damn near write a happy face in the target.  The accuracy was on par with my Commander and that's high praise.

If i needed a general purpose piece of field artillery I'd get a G20 with an aftermarket barrel.

Forget about the G21, Give the G20 a test drive.

It will lead you to a G30 series. I also own and carry a 30sf.
Man do I dig that pistol ... Challenges my G19 for belt time.

And 45 is coming down and more available.

It's the All-American bullet.

I have 4 Glock G21's. Two G4 and 2 G3SF. Also have a G30SF. Like them all. I also have a FN FNX 45 which is the best 45 I own. The 15 round mag plus cock and lock, de-cocker and grip slimmer than a G4 G21. Accuracy is fantastic.

I also own 3 G20's which I use the G20G4 as my daily CCW.

For my G21 (which I have had for 20 years and simply cannot bring myself to even consider parting with) I have the following:

Threaded barrel for my .45 Osprey + 8 13rd mags
An entire Lone Wolf threaded 10mm SS upper & 8 G20 15rd mags
An AA .22 conversion kit + 6 mags
And a theaded MechTech CCU carbine convesrion in .45 ACP + 8 Kriss 30 rd mags

I am trying desperatly to find a reason not to pick up a MechTech upper in 10mm. It's getting harder every day. So far the only reason I can come up with is that I have no more room in my shooting bag for anything else. This would be the same range bag that I had to replace because all I can fit in it are the G21 and accessories, so now I have to carry two range bags if I intend to shoot anything other than the G21 or a variant of it.

Don't do it. It can rapidly become a disease, one which can grow to require it's own safe, for Christ's sake! It truly is my most versatile and useful handgun. BTW, I also quite often CCW a G30. I got it bad for the big Glocks!

Between the sizes, is the gen 4 with the small backstrap about the same size as a 21sf or smaller/larger?

To me  the gen 4 with no back strap felt smaller compared to the SF although  they are supposed to be the same.
