It's come down to these as the only variants that I like and can afford.  Thye Galil has the folding stock and the Valmet the wooden.  They are about the same price.  Any opinions?  Thanks!

The Valmet will always be a factory original and the conversion is always a conversion.  It seems to me that factory originals are the better choice when the cash is about the same.  They hold thier value better and are more desireable.  YMMV

Firedog,

That makes sense.  It's just that the damn Galils (even the conversions) are just so nice looking with their folding stocks.  Thanks for the reply.

Mags are cheaper and more readily available for the galil, same for spare parts.

I've been watching some 5.56 Galils.  None are meeting reserves, highest any have gone are around $2100-$2200.  Levallois, I'm not sure what you want to spend but a cash offer of $2500 might buy one.

Firedog,

I've thought about making an offer on some of these auctions too and I've saved the cash but it would kill me to pay $2500 for a rifle - any rifle, even a Galil.  I'm the cheapest person alive.

and I thought $3175.00 for a MR Galil ARM 5.56 was a good price.

I've been looking at .223s because I have  two other rifles chamberd for it and a ton of ammo.  I haven't really considered a .308 - maybe I should?

You should, but when it comes to Galils, I personally prefer 5.56

So , Your the one who got the rest of the dealers to start thinking that their Galil was made of gold and worth these OUTRAGEOUS prices that they are "asking".

If it was not for the same rifles getting reposted over and over on Gunbroker there would be nothing to look at on that site.

Well, they sure aren't accepting any lower offers.  I've offered $2500 (taking Ugh, Templar and Firedog's advice) on two Galil 386s with flat turn-downs on each.  The one guy ended up selling his for $2800.  The other is still for sale at $3000.  I haven't seen any for less money.  The only 261 out there has a reserve of $2750.  I'd make him an offer but I'm not sure about the 18" barrel.  The Model 392 ARMs are even worse - I haven't seen any of these for less than $3300.  Are they selling for this price?  Apparently so, because the owners aren't budging on the price.

I'm a newby here, but it seems like these rifles are climbing in value pretty quickly.  I guess you could suggest that we not buy them at this price and then they'd go down, but eventually someone from outside the group will buy at these prices and they'll hold strong.  I collect Colts and Winchesters, so I know a little bit about supply and demand and crazy prices - right now with Galils there is too much demand and not enough supply.

I can still get a M62 or M76 Valmet for $1000-1200 less - I may have to go that route even with the lack of parts and expensive mags. I wasn't crazy about paying $2500 for a Galil - $3000 would flat-out kill me.

Actually, I wasn't.

But tell me where I can find a Galil ARM 5.56 for cheaper.

Galil's and other quality 89 prebans have one thing in common.....No more factory rifles will be brought in to this country. Small numbers brought in with a large demand. They will and are commanding some high prices. I got rid of 6 of my AR15's and started buying pre-89 rifles about five years ago. With some horse trading ,stashing cash and luck I have added a FNC,AUG, Factory FN Fal, HK93, 2 IMI Galil's,Valmet 76, Ar70 and some others. They are a good investment and will only go up in price. Jump in now before they really go nuts!   Jerod

My friend , thats the kicker.  I know of no where you can find one with a cheaper asking price.

Of course , asking and selling prices are not always the same.

I have aquired many pre 89 rifles for much less than the asking price.

I second the advice of making lower offers. Its like asking every woman you meet if they want to have sex , ask enough and one will say yes

Levallois

Where can  I pick up a m62, m76 valmet for $ 1,000 - $ 1,200 ? I have cash burning a hole in my pocket.

that was $1000-$1200 LESS (than the cost of a $3000 Galil).

Right now there are a bunch of Valmet's on Sturmgewehr.com & a few Galil's. I got A 71S & 62
for 3,100.00 very happy. I like the Valmet's better. They are built like tanks.

Thanks for the head-up but I've already taken the plunge.  Waiting on the dang thing as we speak, and I'm not a patient man.  No hints but I can't wait to see it and I'll tell the story behind it and my other almost purchase then - with photos.  Should be here in a week.

I got a conversion.  couldn't be happier.  'conversion will always be a conversion' - yes, but you also get a real IMI receiver.  I'm kinda proud of the HUGE 'galil sporter' on the side!
