Does anyone know why many of the older imi/action arms galils have a grey barrel,gas block front sight ?

IIRC they had a parked barrel and paint over park action....Why? Who knows.

Because paint won't stay on the barrel after it get's hot a couple of times.
The South Africans painted the entire rifle but then their armorers had plenty of spray paint for touch up!

The paint was an extra layer of protection for the rifle.
