Want to create a late 80's Russian AKS-74 clone.

Was thinking about using this kit as the base:

http://www.rguns.net/gunparts/rifle-parts-AK.shtml

(2nd Kit Down.) "Izhmash military AK-74 5.45x39mm assault rifle parts kit. Unissued, like new condition with matching serial numbers." Cruising about the internet leads me to believe these are circa 1988. That's pleasing to me as it's still within the Soviet Afghan War period.

Would this be a good buttstock to get???

http://www.k-var.com/shop/AK-IFS.html

"Izhmash Left-side metal folding buttstock. Russian metal with straight edge and smooth plate. Left-side folding triangular metal stock! It incorporates a slick hinge mechanism for a solid lock-up. Available for the first time as a separate unit, it’s a direct replacement for the solid polymer folder that is standard equipment on the Arsenal SLR-106F and SLR-106FR rifles, and uses the same standard 4.5mm pin. It also has the same pivot pin angle as used on the SLR-106. Rear trunnion with folding stock hardware sold separately."

Well it's Izhmash going on a Izhmash kit ... sounds good so far. Would the straight edge and smooth buttplate be appropriate for the late 80's? "Same pivot pin angle as the SLR-106" - is that good, bad, or immaterial?

Is this parts set all I need to install it?

I can't tell if it includes the forward latch.......

An alternative route would be to get one of these:

http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/component/virtuemart/shipping-accessories/bulgarian-ak-74-parts-kit-wood-with-barrel-and-side-folding-stock-detail.html?Itemid=0

"Bulgarian AK-74 parts kit in NRA excellent to new condition w/ all matching numbers 5 .45 x 39 They have the Original Military folder stock and trunion is milled to accept the proper pieces"

By far the cheapest route.

Alternatively am I better off getting this complete rifle and calling it close enough?

http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/component/virtuemart/shipping-rifles/ak74-sgl-31-85-5-45x39mm-side-folding-rifle-detail.html?Itemid=0

Maybe hunt down and add some plum handguards and an earlier flashhider? Weld over the "S" and "F" and have the cyrillic markings added?

I think the first plan will result in the most accurate and satisfying clone... but also by far the most expensive. Am I missing something? Thoughts?

Thank You!

sounds like a good plan. The only issue you're going to have is finding a good barrel, and finding all the parts in stock, although kvar says all those are in stock. If you're going to do this project, I'd say find a Bulgarian barrel and use that. You can use a US barrel, but that will detract from the appeal of the rifle if you ever sell it. I'd also go with a 74llc receiver, he puts a lot of detail into his receivers.

I had a spare Bulgarian barrel and used that along with the 74U LLC receiver. Took about 3 months for them to ship the receiver but it was well worth the wait. Mario at PoHF did my build and I couldn't be happier with it

Looks like the forward latch parts are there to me, the forward latch parts on my triangle sidefolder are in the pic you posted.
