In the recent past I bought a WASR-10 and had some Ideas for modifying it some.

This here is a photo of the rifle when it was new, I would really love to replace the crappy sling.
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f66/4630183/DSC01922Small.jpg
The sling is sofa-king ugly and its not even an AK sling.
The first thing I had to do was fix the wood on the gun; it's just a NASTY oily mess.
NOTICE: the heal on the pistol grip is so poorly fitted a seven year old could've done a better job.
Thanks to sand paper and a Dremel, I'm set.
I need to fit the end cap to the stock better and I plan on painting the cap black.
The wood will be sanded and cleaned, and then a dark stain will be added
(minwax, color- jacobean 2750)
After about three or four coats of stain I will hand rub "boiled linseed oil" on all wood till my hands bleed.
I chose not to put on a high gloss poly finish because they can get damaged to easily and the linseed oil can always be put on over and over.

After the stain, oil process and the fitting of the heal piece.

Next up: Front sight
I had a hard time moving the drift pin for the front sight, even with the sight adjustment tool. I actually spread one open.
Off to the bench vise I went. I needed to brake it free or wear it in, so I put on one side a very small socket (smaller than the dia. of the drift pin) and on the other side a larger socket (large enough for the drift pin to fit inside, but small enough so the socket sits flat on the front sight block), while doing this I put it in the vice and pressed away adding Kroil.
I worked it back and forth several times adding oil constantly. Afterwards the little hand tool I bought was able to do the job on its own. Yea!

I have some dificulty acquiring a target in my sights and I got an Idea from a product I saw. They sell colored sight pins to install but they're made of PLASTIC, after a little though I went to the store in search of some bright acrylic paint and I only needed a small amount. All I could find was some cheap stuff that would chip off or look like crap.  Then it came to me, ladies nail polish. This stuff is hard, tough and sometimes bright. The only problem was I couldn’t find the color in all the thousands they had, so this is the HARD PART, I had to ask for help to find the color I wanted.
Boy ohh boy this was weird, the woman that helped me kind of looked at me strange and I sure couldn’t tell her what its really for in fear of looking like even more of a weirdo, but I still didn't get the color I wanted so I settled for Blaze Orange. She kindly helped me; she was HOT too, that was tough.

BUFFER TIME:
I also wanted to test a recoil buffer so I bought a Blackjack buffer (soft) and installed it.
Link to it here.     Blackjack Buffer @ aim surplus

And since I was in there I popped the bolt out and thought to myself it would be nice to polish it to look just like his  BIG Russian brother. After some blue remover and some more Dremel time it looks pretty good. The steel used is a little pitted but it’s not too bad, it shined up well.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f66/4630183/DSC02108Medium.jpg

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f66/4630183/DSC02109Medium.jpg

Since the AK-47 was designed specifically for the Russian motorized forces in 1947, I though it would be a great tribute to have that remembered on this firearm.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f66/4630183/DSC02085Medium.jpg

That is a dog tag that says "Motorized Rifle Troops". Straight from the old RED ARMY.
I had my name scribed in Cyrillic by a Russian jeweler I know. That gave it the touch I was looking for.

[b]Muzzle brake Time:

I thought I was sure it had threads under that nut so I put on that little small rust colored cut-off wheel on my Dremel and went to work. After carefully removing the weld and not any other material from the rifle, the index pin finally worked as it had not before. The nut was just tight against it but when it was loosened it was freed from tension. When I removed my nut there where 14x1mm LHT.
I was happy; although they were sloppy threads. They were all straight, but when I installed two other brakes they were loose and had a wobble to them. Just stick with the original AK slant brake. I used an AK-74 style, and even with a fabricated washer behind it, the slugs were glancing of the end of the brake causing some problems when shot; like three feet high and to the left. LOL I didn't notice this right away but afterwards it was quite evident that the bullets where hitting the brake. It seems that the threads on my gun are just a lil larger then they're supposed to be. That's Century Arms for ya.

SCOPE AND MAGS

I bought and installed a POSP 8x42V Rifle Scope straight from the RED ARMY, I am really impressed with the optic on this scope although I will never fully use its power on this gun. I'll be happy with 4MOA @ 100 meters. I removed the stupid little rubber cap that it comes with, and installed a flip up (yellow in color) cover.

Lastly:
I have also modified the safety lever so the bolt can be locked open when at the public range.
I scribed the lines on the lever and once again my Dremel tool was set-up for cutting and grinding.
It worked great until I added my recoil buffer, that slightly changed the amount of travel the bolt comes back. So after I installed the buffer I had to make the cut even bigger. I wish I would've thought of this ahead of time. Now I have an extra large hole there, but it still works.
Next gun show I head to,  that is on my list       "one new safety lever please".

I'm still searching for the perfect AK sling....cheap....black or dark green.
And I might pick up a bi-pod for plinking.

I hope you get a laugh out of this, if not, at least some good info for your own MODS.

Sorry I was so long winded.  Enjoy!!!!!

I like it but you may get teased for putting such a huge scope on a low-cap wasr. I definately see some "KEEP THAT CRAP OFF MY AK" posters in your future. Good job though i really like it.

Everything on that low cap (?) AK is appropriate, so you won't hear me say "keep that crap off my AK".  I will however suggest that you should put a proper buttstock and pistol grip on it.

I really agree about getting a new stock of some sort and a pistol grip, the Dragunov stock belongs on just that; a Dragunov.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f66/4630183/SVD.jpg

The stock is comfortable to me but I know I can find a lighter one that will compare. I heard somewhere that people had trouble of some sort putting a pistol grip on the WASR-10 Dragunov, something to do with the receiver. I think it looks the same to me.

Ohh .....The scope is really only for fun. I might kill a deer with it someday, but that falls under the category of fun as well.

We'll see if I can talk my wife into poseing with the AK, that will bring some good feedback.

It is the mark of an educated mind, one who can entertain a thought without accepting it.

Pick up some 1", or 1.5" and a pair of tri-glides and make your own silent sling. Cost, a couple of bucks.

Or, you could order an Israeli sling for 'round 15.

As mentioned by a previous poster you put alot of stuff into a low cap  WASR dumped enuff time and money into a low cap WASR to actually buy a REAL AK.  Besides that its a very very interesting thing to look at.   Now go out and shoot it.

Am I missing something?  Why does everybody keep calling this a low cap AK?  The mags look like double stack hi capacity to me.

I pretty much bought this rifle on a spur of the moment basis and never thought I would do much but shoot it once and a while. As we all know here (at the AK-47 forum) once you immerse yourself in the world of the AK the process of refinement is seemingly endless. Sure I could have bought another type of AK but I (if you know me) would have spent that much more on that rifle. LOL.

I think they are all real AKs don't you. Most part are interchangeable or are strikingly similar, they all operate in the same manor, and some are just made cheaper than others. All are built on the same design. But if you wanna get all technical and stuff a REAL AK would say something like
"Автомат Калашникова образца" on the side or AK-47, AK-74, RPK, AKM, AKMS and the AK-101,103, and 107. Now those are real AKs.

Not only is it a never ending process of refinement, it is also a never ending process of learning.

The wife has been told!!!! photos will soon be posted.

Ciao' for now

I found that My FCG was real gritty a rough the couple time I shot it so I thought I would take the advice of Linx310 from his web site here.
Doing so should create a much smoother trigger pull minus the grit and poor feel.
The web site guided me to a dead link of instructions for removal of FCG but that was not hard to find elsewhere.

FCG removal instructions here

It was so easy to do; I thought it was going to be more difficult.

The finished product:
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f66/4630183/DSC02120Medium.jpg

I shined it up to an absolute mirror finish, although this picture does not do it justice.

When I tested it in home, it was perfect; I can't wait till next weekend to shoot it now.
When done I added to all contact parts in the FCG a thin coat of (Tetra gun's) Fluoropolymer penetrating heavy-duty grease lubricant. GREAT STUFF FOR THE BOLT SLIDE TOO!

THANKS LINX310!!!! GREAT SITE!!!!

Theyre low cap. Theyre thin mags - look really closely, especially at the floorplate.

No shit?  Those look like high capacity mags to me, but having never messed with a low cap mag I guess I am wrong.  So, the very next thing I would do with that rifle, before anymore cosmetic stuff is convert it to high capacity.

when you look at the mag when its in the coupler you see how much wider of a magazine it expects; suggesting to me that its a single. i agree, although i think that would have been the first thing i did.

that and get that buttstock off of there.

Thanks TRGAMS............
I can settle this once and for all.  They are low cap 10 round mags. LOL

I often ponder the enjoyment I would receive from the project of converting this gun to hi-capacity mags, although I fear F---ing it up or it may not even feed at all. I need to do some more research before tackling that job.

This gun: GP-WASR-10 Dragunov style ....Yes low-cap
I really had no idea what to look for when purchased.

1) Will I need to modify the feed ramp?

2) Will the mags wobble and rattle like crazy?

3) Will the trunion need to be modified as well to do it properly?

4) How different is my gun from others that are hi-cap?

I'm not sure that the tacked project in the (Romanian) section here is real or if he really screwed it up and won't admit to it. As he quotes "Most of my Post ARE BS, or even worse meant to screw with people.. so grab your boots." I have never seen another project completed like this one on-line, I have only read about people how claim it's possible.

If I can find this info I will do it for sure!
And I am in the market for a new stock of some type. I agree with you Cigolon

good to hear, make it a real fearsome ak. get a pistol grip and convert that baby to high cap. its a fairly easy conversion. all you have to do is widen the mag well with a dremel tool, nothing else. depending how much you wide it will depend on how much wobble you get, and it will depend on which type of magazines fit in there. its not something to worry about, wobble i mean, it wont give you any negative effects- and believe me, an ak with a high cap mag is far better than an ak without one. you'll wonder why it wasn't the first thing you did

that thread is exactly how to do it. take your time and you'll have yourself a high cap ak soon.

if you are really worried you may mess it up, take it to a gun smith and ask them how much it would cost to widen it. either way, its worth the time/trouble/money to have high caps.

you would need to install the proper number of compliance parts to stay legal with hi caps.

When I widened mine,  I had to grind the part that the front of the mag hooks into. This isn't mentioned in that specific thread that's stickied on here. Still, it was no big deal. I used a die grinder (off my air compressor) and did the fine grinding with a Dremel. It took about an hour, if you use an electric rotary tool, it will take a little longer. Very easy, jusy take your time as mentioned.

I have 2 mags that wobble about 1/2 inch and those are the US made polymer ones. My Chinese steel mags don't wobble at all. And it still feeds HPs fine, even with those cheesy polymer mags.

Good luck! It's worth it.

Looks like you might be able to clamp both of your mags facing up and evenly side by side so that it doesn't extend out so much.
