I have a SAR-1 with the serial number S1-XXXXX-03. I assume that this is a 2003 model. Is anyone aware of any major changes between these and the 99-2002 models?

My SAR has 2003 at the end..The only difference I can tell is Quality Control got a little better on 02's and 03's....Shame we may not see anymore priced right AK's...My .02 cents

Other than QC being roughest in 99-00, none.
