Archived [ARCHIVED THREAD] - Removal of "Paint" from Bolt Carrier/Gas Piston?

Hi all - I have a Romanian SAR-1 that has what appears to be paint that was sprayed on the rear of the bolt carrier.  The front of the gas piston is clean metal, but the rear appears to be painted black.

Question: is this paint, and if so can it be removed to make the entire rod clean metal?

I think that it must be blueing because I used Hoppe's Blue and Rust remover and it came right off.

Now I have a pewter colored bolt carrier.

You can polish it further if you want a really shiny finish.

the romy carrier is factory finished in black oxide, a form of rust blueing.

after century welds the gas piston into the carrier, they spray painted the front of the carrier and rear of the gas pistion to cover up the heat discoloration.

so, in all likelyhood, you have both paint and black oxide on the carrier.

steel wool will polish up the gas piston nicely.
