I have a very nice set of Russian AKM laminate furniture that I thought about selling. After re-thinking it though, I might just put it on my SAR-1. Anyone done this before? Or would I be violating the code of AK traditionalism beyond repair?

Not at all.
In the early days of the hobby, that was one of only a few options you had to use for that "Russian AKM" look. Here's a Romanian SAR-1 albeit with some clean up: 
The SAR-1 is a great foundation for a lot of rifle build projects. |

My Romanian has Soviet AKM furniture (all Izhmash), a slant muzzle brake and Izhmash bakelite mags and I think it looks really nice.You have it how you want mate
