I just sawed the "dong" off of a Romanian "G" style lower handguard and smoothed down the cut area to kinda hide the fact that the "dong" was ever there.. How should I go about re-finishing the wood to get it back to the way it should be??

Here's a "before" pic::

and an "after" pic:::

Underside pic::

What color would be appropriate for this Romanian AK??

Let me know..
Thank you

that's a tough one, you have a laminated HG but a hardwood stock.

try the birchwood casey walnut stock stain, it is water based and a muddy brown.  might be a good match, and it will be easy to find.

a hardwood HG would look better, but they are scarce.

is that buttstock beech?  need better pics of the buttstock.  looks like it might be yugo.

ETA looks like beech.  man, you should have left the UHG alone, I have a hardwood LHG that would have been a perfect match.

The Romanians used shellac. The only way to match the finish is to use the same thing.

Trying to match the grips to the butt stock will he hard to do at the best.

me personally I would go for a total refinish so I would be sure it matched.

Update::
I got started tinkering around with some mahogany stain and came up with a good way to make the handguards look pretty much more natural after the "dong" was cut off.. Here's a few pics ...

You can barely tell that the "dong" was ever there in the first place after I got done tinkering with the finish

the profile of the handguard is still bulged at the bottom compared to an original dongless.

not that it matters either way, i just had to point that out. good stain work.

Oops... Double tap..

ETA:: Since this was a "double tap" I figured I'd make the most of it and mention that the AK I cut the "dong" off of is listed in the EE for sale if anyone might be interested.

As per the rules, keep any and all posts concerning price, questions, etc... to my post in the EE..
