So one is on the way and I want to make it look like a real AK.  What and where are my best options to tweak the furniture.  I'd like to keep the blonde furniture up front, add a matching stock, and a black pistol grip.  This won't cause any legal problems right?  I do live in a free state if that matters.

Thanks in advance with a basic question, this is my first AK(sorta)!!

Get a Romanian Military Laminate "Take Off" Buttstock (With trapdoor for AKM TOOLkit that came with your weapon) and a Yugo Black Plastic M70 pistol Grip (Grip Screw & nut neeeded also because the WASR 22 stock does  not have those) and if your WASR 22 came with the nylon Green Romanian sling in the box use that for sure ! Look in the FAQ section of the AK area of this board for  list of AK Parts & Accesories Vendors like K-var , Military Gun Supply, Copes Dist., and Centerfire Systems...

Donkey,

You seem to be quite a champion for the WASR 22, some of your posts sealed the deal for me actually.  My search-fu is weak as I have not been very lucky in my quest for a stock.  Tell me about the mags at SOG?  Where can I find a stock by itself?  I have seen plenty of places with the pistol grip.

Thanks in advance.

The stock is Romanian and the handguards are Soviet

SOG= Southern Ohio Gun  ask for AKT-98 magazine (AKMT22 Magazine 19.95 ea.) and for furniture Check K-Var , Military Gun Supply, Centerfire Systems, Cheaper than Dirt,... All of the AK parts vendors listed in the Big AK FAQ section of the AK INFO AREA OF THIS FORUM !   You will have to do a Little Grinding on the Topside square Tabs of the Mag to fit your WASR 22 but it's very easy (I used a Roatary Die Grinder on 2 of em) but a Bench Grinder will work also ...

Do you have to worry about 922 compliance with a WASR22?  I am looking at possibly purchasing one and it comes with the thumbhole stock and would like to switch to a regular stock and pistol grip.

Or doesn't 922 apply to rimfire?
Link Posted: 2/28/2008 8:08:56 AM EDT
[#20]
Rimfire is Exempt from Cal AWB (Draconian kalifornia "special  in house AWB") so if you get  trouble in Montana or Alabama over 922r on a Rimfire i would be really really surprized !

Well I live in PA.  I never understood this 922r thing, I thought that was a national ATF policy and not limited to certain states.

(still confused)

over 4 months later and 7000+ rd.s 20+ Range visits and no one has approached me about 922r Status (Not even LEO's) so ask some of the posters who have had AKT-98's for 3 years and see if they are staying in line with 922r ?

akastormy how did you mount the Yugo M59/66 grenade launcher on the WASR 22 ? DID YOU THREAD BARREL ????
Link Posted: 3/1/2008 5:27:02 AM EDT
[#25]
No threads, pinned on
It was the style with the holes in it for muzzle jump.
Had it in the parts box, my son thought it would look cooler that a slant brake.

I had a Ported GL also in mind (Spare one in my footlocker also) so did you remove threads inside GL SO IT WOULD SLIDE ON AK barrel ,Then pin it through existing GL pin hole ?

I got my 22 in and cannot get the lower handguard off.  I am new to AK's, any tricks?  I can get the lever to rotate up a bit by hand, a bit more by tapping, but I don't want to snap this thing off trying to clean the gun.

I have never removed mine ,but this is another thread that screams (WASR 22 Section of board is needed) (The GSG 5 guys got theirs)

I feel so lame...  I liked the way my PSL stock handled so much, I simply trimmed the grip area to "fit", then "bleached" all the wood and made my own blondey yellow stain from RIT dye to make the blonde I wanted.

I picked up a Romy sidefolder to add, but I want to find a wood PG to blonde it to match the forestock before I swap the butts.

Man, I gotta figure out a way to add pics...

I'm happy with mine looking like just another Romy G or WASR 10 from Century (Minus the slant brake) and with a M70 PG insted of the Romanian one ...

If you are worried about 922r compliance then get a US made pistol grip and butt stock from either Tapco or KVar.  I would probably use the ATI folding and extending stock so my nine year old can use it and I can extend it for me.

Changed the gay furniture on my WASR-22, put on a Romanian folder and tried to put on a pistol grip but the pistol grip nut doesn't fit in the pistol grip nut hole.  Anyone else have a WASR-22 with a too small pistol grip nut hole?  It will be a pain to file it larger by hand but there are no other options.
Link Posted: 7/5/2008 1:08:15 PM EDT
[#36]
Ok here are two of mine configurations so far. The handguard is off a Bulgy AK74 and the stock ia a NATO length KVAR. (I think).

@nd I just did today as my son naps. Its a Tapco folder I had laying around. Im not a big Tapco folder fan, but it makes a compact ground Hog slayer!!

That happened to me on my WASR2. I ended up grinding away at the PG "nut" that fits up in the recvr - vs. grinding out the hole in the receiver itself. Always modify the cheapest part 1st.
The WASRs have some loose specs to them; sometines a stock "slips right on", other times your wrassling with it.

I too decided to go with the poly furniture:

love that poly funiture .. reminds me of the new metal gear solid game:

i'm afraid that if i put poly furniture on my wasr-22, i'll go overboard and end up with an ultimak rail and burris fastfire red dot.  must .. stay .. factory .. stock!
