What does MISR stand for??

Below is a photograph of one of the new (July, 1999) so-called MISR 90 AK-style rifles. These are designed on Egyptian receivers with just enough U.S. made parts to qualify as legal with pistol-grip and stock. If you purchase one of these and outfit the rifle with any magazine of greater than 10-round capacity, be certain the high-cap magazine is of U.S. manufacture. If it is an imported mag, one slips across the border into Illegal Land. These are not to be mistaken for the new MISR-10 which has been redesigned for a single-stack magazine and will NOT accomodate ANY of the old double-stack high capacity magazines.

"MISR" is what the actual modern Egyptians call Egypt which roughly translates to "country".

As for MISR 90, that is what Century Arms called a botched abortion of a rifle they assembled with Egyptian MISR receivers with left over Chinese rifle parts.

When Chinese guns/ammo were banned from import in April,1994 there were 1000's of MAK-90 rifles in customs. The BATF allowed these rifles to be imported as parts kits as long as the receivers were distroyed. Needless to say with no receivers made or imported for AK rifles in the USA the MAK-90 parts kits sold about like bags of ice cubes at the north pole. In 1996-1997 Century Arms bought thousands of MAK-90 parts kits and imported AK receivers from Egypt.
The first Egyptian receivers imported had the front and rear trunions along with the trigger guard/mag catch installed on them. The barrels of the MAK-90 parts kits are 19mm in diameter at the chamber end like all Chinese barrels for stamped receiver rifles are. The Egyptian receivers being a copy of the Russian AKM rifle have a hole in the front trunion for the 23mm diameter barrrel of AKM rifles. Russia sold Egypt a whole AKM factory and set it up for them. So the 19mm Chinese barrels required a 2mm thick steel sleeve be pressed on them so they could be pressed into the 23mm hole of the Egyptian receivers trunion for a tight fit. The first MISR-90 rifles looked like crap with scratches/gouges on the barrel,trunion,and front of the receivers from pressing the barrel and sleeve into the trunion. For the second batch of MISR-90 rifles Century Arms imported Egyptian receivers without the front trunion. They removed and rivited the trunion from the MAK-90 parts kits into the Egyptian receiver which resulted in a much nicer looking rifle.

Century Arms imported the MISR rifle made in Egypt. Both the MISR and MISR-90 had no US made parts.
In 1999 they imported the MISR-SA made in Egypt which didn't have a trigger,hammer,or sear. A USA made hammer,trigger,sear,magazine follower and floorplate were added to comply with the law. Later in 1999 the MISR-10 Egyptian made rifle was imported that could only use 5 or 10rd magazines so no US made parts were needed. Many of these rifles were later converted to use high capacity magazines and US parts were added to them.
