I believe it is a good deal if it is in good condition and functions.  Parts are a bit harder to get and Mags are a bit more expensive.  Bulgarian waffle mags are hit and miss for function and the original 30 rd Chinese mags are $25-$30 on the equipment exchange.  If it is postban and doesn't have the original thumbhole stock on it, it has to be compliant with 922(r).  5 compliance parts of US manufacture from the 922(r) list.

If it has the 5 parts then it is a great deal especially if it comes with any mags.  If it doesn't have any compliance part and happens to be postban then it is illegally configured.

If it is preban for that price and can be verified and does not have a B-West US manufactured receiver but a Norinco import receiver then it is worth more.  If it is preban it does not need compliance parts.Check out the links I posted on this thread.

My postban compliant BWK-92 .223 Chinese AK. There were also NHM-90's and NHM-91's in .223 which would be postban. Sile imports had some rifles caught in customs that were then released which would be 1-56S-1 marked on them.  There are some Polytech .223 rifles that use a mag I believe that is different then the type of mag used in my BWK-92 or most Norinco rifles.  If it is one of these mags may be even harder to find.  

It was a US pin on AK-74 type brake which you knock the Front pin out of the FSB and use a longer replacement pin to hold it in place after knocking the brake onto the front of the barrel with a plastic mallet as it was a tight fit.  I don't know who carries them anymore.  The muzzle could possibly be threaded with a 1/2 x 28 die and then you could use an muzzle attachment with those threads or a adapter with a 24mm right hand thread on the outside to mount any Bulgarian type brake or flashhider.  Member wjm was renting a kit to do this at one time but I don't know if he still does  [email protected].

The 14 x 1 kit Left Hand thread easily threads most 7.62 AKs (2001 SARs, WASRs and MAK90s need to measure the outside diameter of the barrel, as some of these have had the barrel turned down

The 1/2 x 28 kit will thread an SAR2 or SAR3 and other barrels with an outside diameter of approximately .500", including some of the WASRs with the turned down barrels.


If you plan on threading a 2003 model SAR1, WASR or a MAK90, you need to measure the outside diameter of the barrel at the muzzle. If you don't have a set of calipers, just hold a ruler across the end of the barrel. If you have a metric ruler, it needs to be close to 14mm. If you are using an inch ruler, it needs to measure about .551" (roughly 9/16 of an inch.

Some of these guns have had the barrels turned down, leaving them too thin to thread with a 14mm die (standard for AKs). The good news is that most of them can still be threaded with my ½ x 28 threading kit.



You would have to remove the FSB to thread if your barrel is thick enough and use a drill press to drill the hole for the retainer spring and pin or possibly silver solder the brake or adaper and brake to hold them in place if you don't install a retainer pin.

Still an very good deal if you don't mind putting in compliance parts if it needs them.  I've seen the .223 postban rifles go for $400.00 and a bit more.
