Well, you read the title, can I? I will be turning 18 in a couple months so I am looking foward to getting an AK as a gift. I already have an AR15 (yeah I know I have come to the dark side so don't tell any of the guys on the other threads). I really have no idea about the gun, makers, who to buy from, etc. I just know I want another assult rifle and really don't want to spend a fortune upgrading my AR. SO, if you guys could point me in the right direction about where to go with this and all that good stuff it would be much appreciated! Thanks! -Lance

hell yeah.  For that kind of money you can be looking at a Vepr which is more of a RPK but a hell of a good gun.  Lots of other good stuff in that price range.

For that kind of cash you can have either a Vector underfolder, or a Vector classic and get change back.  Yes, I am a fan of Vectors.  Go to www.atlanticfirearms.com and look at their AK section.

My SAM-5S ran me $680 out the door.  Yeah, you can get a fine AK for consdierably less than that.

You can get two AKs for the price of one AR.  I had a few AKs, then tried the AR, now I have
no ARs.  There are as many different varieties as a person could imagine, and none of them bad from what I can tell.  Let us know which one you get.

If you want an AK-74 clone look for an Arsenal SLR-105 A1, usually they go for around $600. Closest thing you will ever find to a real 74. They fire the 5.45x39 round, which is pretty similar to the 5.56 round the ARs shoot.

SLR-105s have been discontinud and are no longer being imported, but you might find one on the equipment exchange. I love mine, so much fun to shoot. Be advised that ammo is very hard to find right now, but many of us are hoping that will change soon. We'll see, but the ammo problem is something you should consider.

you can get an armory usa SSR-85C-2 (wood or poly) 7.62x39 for $529. I recently bought one from ordnanceoutsellers after i read some very good things about them and also the vector classics that are on the market.

They are in short supply. I paid $450 a few weeks ago from my local dealer and $525 at a gunshow this past  weekend. Most small dealers have only one or two, if they're lucky. Some are price gouging at $600 or more.

Here are a few I have my eye on as of right now: (only looking off the atlanticfirearms.com site)

AK47 Rifle SSR 85 C2 Armory USA , Global Trades (see below)

Vector Arms AK 47 Classic Wood Style

AK47 European Classic style rifle (trying to find the differences between this and the SSR 85???)

what do ya think?

I don't think you can lose with a 500-600 budget.  You're going to get a high quality AK for that price.

Just stick with the brands and make these people have mentioned.

who built the euro ak? call up altantic. if they say it is an elite build RUN away.

personally,  i would go with the vector underfolder for $600
http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/programming/expand.asp?Prodid=8

also you could  pick up a WASR for $300, slap a $50 folder on there and have some money left for mags and ammo
http://www.militarygunsupply.com/shop/item.asp?itemid=FICEWASR

of course some people will tell you a WASR is a low grade POS...

i bought an SSR-85-C2 and it runs great. i was a little worried that it would not shoot Wolf HP based on some of the reviews i have read but mine shoots HP, SP and FMJ rounds just fine. the only complaint i have is that my muzzel break is loose when lined up with the pin. i also looked at the European Classic but after talking to Atlantic firearms i decided the SSR-85-C2. i think i made the right choice.

I paid $500 for my Global Trades. Atlantic sells them. It is a nice AK. Vetors are good and of course Arsenals are good and yes if you can find one Veprs are good. Those are all top of the line AKs and yes you have been living in the AR15 only world to long. LOL
