Ok guys-I'm considering buying one of ORF's used RPK kits, but here is the question: is it worth it for me to invest more money into 5.45x39 weapons? As it is I have struggled to find 1000 rounds of Wolf for my SLR-105, and I'm becoming concerned that the ammo situation may not improve. I don't want two very nice rifles that just sit there and can't be fired. I typically hate the weekly "is 5.45 a dead round?" posts, but I'm sure some of you are trying to make similar purchasing decisions, and so I am curious about your views on this. Thanks.......Jeff

Hi Jeff,

I have the same dilemma, as I'm sure others do.  The ammo shortage is disconcerting, because like you, I'd like to acquire an AK-74.  Or more, in your case.  Another option, is to go with a .223 variant, but quality rifles are getting as rare as 5.45 ammo.  Besides, from what I've read, the 5.45 is superior to the 5.56.

I've decided to just stick with my 7.62 rifles and ammo, and play the "waiting game."  Although, 7.62 is difficult at times to get as well.

I don't know, if I were you I'd just stick with the one you have.  Tough choice.

My 5.45/56 choices?  My AR15s...for now.

7.62x39 is hard to find now. At a lot of places its backordered until april, or just flat out expensive. Is 7.62x39 a dead round?

Order your ammo and wait for the back order to fill. Just because you cant get it next week doesnt mean theres some huge problem.

Yes I ordered a bunch of 5.45x39 and 7.62x39 yesterday from SG. I can wait for it as I have more than enough.

I know people will slam SG for having stuff on backorder . But at least they have kept their prices reasonable compared to other vendors. If you are out of anything shame on you for not stocking up. You should always keep a case of ammo for each weapon stored away at the minimum.

I can wait for the ammo. I've got enough to last for another year. I say buy it.

I would stick with 7.62. I dont think the shortage will last very long.

Have u ever checked the AR side. Every thing is in the short right now. WAR man, everybdoy is  slurping up all the ammo. Dont worry there will be plenty to come in the future. So I say buy another if you want it.  Gun value is going up all the time and part kits are getting harder to get because of the Gov.

I sure do love the 5.45 round though. Took my SLR-105 to a friend's farm today and shot about 150 rounds. Used a bunch of firewood as targets, blasted them to pieces...it was great. The AK74 type muzzle break and the 5.45 round combine in a way that produces almost zero muzzle climb, it's awesome.

So I may gamble and get one of those used RPK kits, I only hope I'm making the right choice. I would like to find a new Plum stock set too, the ORF ones look to be pretty beat up.....

MCO 119,

I  am looking into a .223 ak ala  Norinco bwk-92, personally I don't think the ammo shortage will last too long.  However, I am exploring my options.  I just wish that I would have picked bwk-92 up at $250 a while back when nobody wanted them.  Now, I seem to be looking at around $375.00.  Doesn't WAR suck?

im still thinking that wolf sold alot of its ammo to iraq. wouldnt be suprising but would also explain the 7.62x39 and 7.62x54r shortages from wolf. all i have left is 30 rounds of wolf fmj 20 rounds of yugo and 20 of the cheeta ammunition ( wanted to see how it shot). damn hopfuly the next gun show the prices dont go up agian here.

Absolutely not... no one has any 5.45x39.  To help my brothers, I am willing to buy up those rotten AK74's at a huge loss to their owners :)  But think how well you will rest at night :)

Order a buttload of ammo (as much as you can afford) for the caliber you are trying to get. I bought 2 880 round cases of 7.62x54R  from SG for $75 a piece and then I bought a Mosin Nagant. I probably have a life supply of ammunition for this gun. I will never worry about buying ammo again, for this gun. And will likely get another gun to shoot this ammunition.

My advice is to buy 5-10 cases of ammunition for a gun, then you should never run out. Always keep a big buffer that you'll never shoot off. Like 4-5k rounds. If that ammo does dry up completely, you'll have a nice stash for the life of the gun. I am buying an AKs worth of ammo instead of buying a new gun. This is the way to go.
