I'm sure the US Govt is dumping alot of 7.62 in Iraq/Afghanistan... However, Chavez is taking delivery of 100,000 "assault rifles" from Russia, and has deals pending with other nations as well. This is factual info and has been recently reported by the media. Therefore, I'd imagine that while stockpiling the Russian arms, you'd also stockpile the Russian ammo. Edited to back up my post: Not only AKs but helos too!

Not to my knowledge. Russia is toying around with 5.56, but I don't think they've started to replace the venerable AK-74 yet. I'm not sure about all the other ex-Warsaw Pact countries. |

I wouldn't doubt panic buying there either once rumors of a 7.62 shortage popped up..... they never import nearly as much 5.45, and 5.45 owners are more likely to be in touch with the "rumor mill" than the average SKS owner out there is. Plus I have been here almost a year and not seen a 5.45 AK, and nobody I have talked to in Iraq has either.... so sending it to either place is not a logical explination, but panic buying explains it fine. |

Only one current-issue firearm uses it (AK74M). Only one producing country that I know of issues 5.45 to their military -- Russia -- and that's only because they don't have the budget to change over to 5.56 rifles and be like everyone else on the (com)block. I'm sure some import brand will keep producing 5.45 so long as there are non-producers like Ukraine that still issue 5.45 rifles; until their regional economies pick up sufficiently and they finally budget in a change-over to a NATO standard rifle. |

The AWB dies, lots of people go and buy new "assault weapons" and now there's not as much ammo out there? It's a mystery! 'Cause it's certainly not because of lots of new people firing lots of rounds out of their new guns.
(My buddy bought his first evil rifle last spring, an Arsenal Inc AK-clone. He has since put about 10,000 rounds through it. He could personally account for any shortage here in MN). |

No different than the primer shortage of 94. Massive hoarding is going on, mostly due to recent events around the country. Wolf has issued several press releases lately stating they have never had so many orders.

Yep, the future of the 5.45x39 (a great round in my opinion) is in question with how the Russians decide to go. I have one 74, I'm on the verge of selling it simply because I can't shoot it.

hey guys, if you want 7.62 go to equipment exchange and the ak47 parts and accessories and there is a post with that guy from bluebroker.com and he said hes got 300 cases of the shit for 140 a piece. problem solved, but get it fast cuz it will all go quick. I bought 200 rds off the board today for 25 bucks, not bad.

Any Military orders would not affect Wolf, as they dont make ammo for the Russian military.
The US Mil has bought allot of 7.62 Barnaul ammo from US importers for the WOT.. Both as training ammo to train the forces, as well as aid to Afghanistan, etc. |

Wolf reps at the SHOT Show said why the shortage happened.
It wasn't because of any Afgani Space Shuttle Wars nor even Nations stocking up for WWIII. They quite simply didn't expect the spike in demand last summer and fell behind. Capitalism, supply, demand and inventory control are still new concepts to the Russians. The E-Ninjas will never believe this answer, of course. Just like they thought the 6.8 SPC shortage must be due to the WOT. After all, how could Remington not be making the ultimate zombie killer by the train load?

Well you guys need to just sit tight. Basically we all know about Chavez, the Iraqi's, and the AWB sunset. A real bad time to dependent on one source of ammo in calibers that come really from one country for the most part. However look on the bright side- Russia will never ever phase out 7.62x39, ever- the reason is because of export. Every country that fields AK's in the third world uses that caliber. 5.45 however will be gone as other speculate because it was never officially adopted outside of Russia, as the Russian are looking to make the official switch to 5.56. The Bulgarians know this as the reason for floods of 5.45 kits being dumped in the US from Bulgaria but also floods of 7.62 parts as other countries are gearing up to 5.56. However notice that 5.56 are the most rare of all parts available- because the Bulgarians and Russians are keeping these for the most part for the switch that may not happen for several years. Esspecially if the US decides to go with some new caliber, so likely they are waiting to see what happens with our ammo situation. Rumors however on various boards are that 5.56 might not ever be adopted except in very fractional numbers by Russia but will be adopted almost by all other com bloc countries once they get their acts together. 5.45 is going to be dropped entirely leaving 7.62 since it has been a staple for so long until they make the switch to 5.56. Also 5.45 will gradually become very expensive, notice the tons of parts, lack of ammo- since these are mostly just being surplused out of the com bloc nations esspecially the largest producers in Bulgaria and Russia. 7.62 will level out once the panic buying stops and the war purchases slow. More than likely though not till after the Iraqi conflict is near over but again 7.62 will never go away, not with so many contracts with that caliber already for export.

Completly false! Only a small amount of external X39 was ordered by Chavez. Just enough to hold them over while CAVIM tooled up and which is now producing all X39 used by Venezuelian forces |
