your on the wrong forum to ask if you NEEEEEEEEED something for an ak, unless you want us to tell you the answer you want to hear. Here you go- of course you need a drum clip, everybody does. fuck it buy 2.

I keep a Chinese drum fully loaded but with the spring unwound in my gun room at all times. If I find myself in a truly dire position and my 1911 hasn't gotten the job done, it gives me 75 rounds of reliable firepower at the ready, without worrying about a reload. I can leave the drum loaded like that for years without ruining the spring because of the Chinese design. I just have to wind it quickly before use.
Of course I also have loaded AR mags and loaded FAL mags ready to go. But nothing that holds 75 rounds at the ready without putting any tension on the mag spring. Its just another option ready to go. Do you NEED one? Probably not. It doesn't do anything that three 30-round stick mags don't do just as well. But if they ban them again in the future, will you want one really bad after the price has doubled? Yes you will. So blow $100 and go ahead and get it over with now. |

Yes. Reasons: 1. Every home should have some sort carbine that can be used for self defense. If AKs are your choice because you prefer them to other carbines or because they are in your price range. No I do not believe a carbine is the end all but yes you need one. 2. We NEED to practice the 2nd amendment because if not used we will loose it. Edit: I do not have any drums but I think they would be useful against a vehicle however for most other things I would prefer 20 or 30 rders and for the price I will probably pick up about six 40rders next. |

I got a Romy 75 drum and had fun with it at the range recently. Compact enough that the gun is still easily handled and you can shoot it well. It even dampens recoil with it's extra mass until you've used up half the ammo!
OK. I'm only going to load it up and use it once in a while. But it's fun. No regrets! But I agree the Chinese drum has an advantage for being stored loaded. I got a Romy to save money and because they're built from very thick steel and seem very well made. I've seen the thin Chinese drums. I'd be afraid of damaging it if I dropped it! Have to treat it more carefully. |

 I'll add that while I prefer the loading of the chicom, I've never had a romy stop feeding because I did not turn the key enough times

Also , the Romanian Drums are usually in Pristine condition , because they are shipped via Time Machine.

Do you really think it would hurt the Romanian drums if you keep them loaded? Does Wolff make replacement springs?
 I like to keep my drums loaded. I also like to keep my non-range drums loaded w/ Chinese steel core ammo for special occasions.  Actually, you don't really need a 75 round AK drum. What you really want is a beta mag for your AR! |

How the hell does it work without jamming? Can you bump 250 rounds without a stoppage? ETA: if you keep a Romanian 75rnd drum loaded for a year or so, can you then use it without problems? Will it screw up the spring? |

I read on here, I believe, about a guy that has kept his loaded for 4 or 5 years without any problems. I suspect its like any magazine spring. |

Aside from the point, if you know to turn the key 4 times you won't have that problem. Also it's quicker to turn the key on your drums (plural) than load the Romy drums or 30rd mags.  On topic, I don't need mine now and hope I never will, but they are fun just like an AKM. |

Why would you not already have the magazines loaded? You turn the key and I stick my loaded mag in and will see who gets the first shot off first. Ive never understood why people think leaving the mags loaded ruins them..... |

I don't know about keeping other magazines but 2 glock 21 mags (bought in 1995) were kept fully loaded for 3 years in an evidence bag and when I got them back, the springs became too weak to lock the slide back. However, they are still strong enough to function 100% for the next 4 years (so far). At least that is my personal experience. I've kept all of my 50 or so AK mags fully loaded when not in use for the past 5 years. So far I've not encounted any problems when I take the mags to the range. |

I think that the majority of us here on the board are "waaaaaay past need".

The most tactical would be two polymer (light weight) 40 round mags taped together, with the bumps in the mag removed to allow the mags to hold the bolt open on the last shot. Lighter than the drum, lets you know when you run out, holds 5 more rounds without the wide bulkyness of the drum. Yes you have to switch in between but that also prevents your weapon from overheating.
The drums were made for heavy support weapons and SAWs... not individual soldiers. The drums are for RPKs, and while I will probably get a drum, it will be for recreational bumping and not use should something happen. |
