Elbow grease every time! I restored a bunch of old Mauser's one time that I bought three for $100 from Aimsurplus. My arms looked like Popeye's when they were complete.

Crumple up a sheet of clean aluminum foil and use that to rub the rust.
It works surprisingly well to remove surface rust. But I don't recommend it on a blued barrel. CJ |

I have another question, when you guys oil up your rifles to store for awhile, how much oil do you leave on the gun, do you wipe the oil off or leave a thin film? I dont want anymore rust on my Polytech aks.

My advice after you get the rust off: CLP it inside and out and get some desiccant bags for your safe.

I don't leave much oil on my rifles but I live in the desert. Wipe them down with CLP or 30wt non-detergent motor oil if you are cheap, put them in the safe with desiccant bags or one of those safe rods if you have a safe.

Are you guys using these http://www.drierite.com/catalog3/page16.cfm when storing a rifle? Do you put them into a bag or just in the safe with the rest of the guns.

Had a gun in the family with a little rust on it. A little light steel wool and a coating with Breakfree Collector has done the job very well.

0000 gauge 'polishing' steel wool and some oil
Blue Wonder claims they stick on metal but not on blue for touchup work. When I get around to my Yugo build, I'll know. Thin oil films are nice, but gravity takes over with time. RIG for long term, or get some Boesheild T9 I use a bag twisty on the trigger guards to remind me which guns are in long-term mode and need extra prep before the range. |
