It's kinda funny. I take these out to the range (my swiss, mosin nagants), and I'm next to some other young guys my age (20's), they all have the uber-takticaled-out ARs, and ask me why I spend money on this old time obsolete crap.
another member of the Houston crew wants to find a similar K98, take out the barrel, and make a modernized precision rifle in a different caliber. oh how tragic. |
To be honest - I was waiting to see when you would post some mauser porn.
With a handle like that... I'm not disapointed. Very, very nice. |
Im also in my 20's and love C&R firearms and militaria. Different strokes for different folks, I guess... |
want to work on my Mauser?
im lazy what can I say haha really awesome job on the K98, looks great.... hey also, what you use to make the letters/codes stand out in white? many methods to do this, what did you do? |
lol.
Another good member on this board, is an AR fanatic. We go to the range a lot. I finally asked him why he wouldn't put down $80 for a Mosin plinker or a Swiss work of art, and why he has none of this classic stuff. He said, "Well I have a romanian AK, does that count?" |
from my glock experience....... white crayon comes off easily if you want to take it off, stays on long enough, might have to re-color every few outings. Get the crayon color across the lettering in a rough manner to make sure the groves are filled, get an oil soaked Rag and wipe off what's outside of the groves. |

the best I've found for a cold bluing method. I've tried the 2 degrees of birchwood casey's bluing solution and all of them never gave a dark enough finish or anything that would withstand a lot of cleaning and use. The bluing paste works immediately when rubbed on. I initially removed all of the finish and past bluing attempts with steel wool and hoppes. Then rub a liberal amount of the paste back and forth across the metal. Let dry. It will initially leave a weird rainbow of bluing color over the area. But keep doing the same thing, smear another coat, let dry. Finally when it gets to the color you want (dark enough) spray it down with CLP and polish with a cloth. This gun is more of a safety queen anyway I'm sure the finish would eventually start to wear off with use and harsh solvents. If you didn't get a chance to watch it: Gun number 5 Gewehr 98 from the top 10 thanks to Ken at Red Star Arms for hosting these videos! -mark |

AR 41, nice! Hard code to find. I passed on a bcd/ar 42 dual code a few months back. I'm still kickin myself in the ass for that. Mausers and AKs, make for a nice collection. My two personal favorites.
+534590834059843 on the AK and Mausers for a nice collection....I think they are two of my favorite types of rifles....
White crayon huh? I almost did that, but I held off...I was going to go out and buy some other materials suggested to use to do the job...never got around to it... I at least STARTED to refinish my VZ24 while at home...right now its sanded down, im hoping when I stain it, it looks good.....its a lot of work..takes a lot of time...cant wait to have a break from school again so I can complete the project |
The Czech Mausers are some of the best from what I've heard. I've handled a few. I missed out on AIM's $99 sale they had a few months ago, man that was a good deal. |
yea cool pic...
yep I got one of those $99 VZ24s...it was a helluva deal...im glad I got mine. I had the headspace checked, its right on. Cant wait to shoot it...I wanted to refinish it before I did anything..... I need another Mauser or two, to have and to do a bit of work on.... who wants to donate to the "ineedanothergun" fund? |
I had a few of the RC k98s. I sold em all.. I'm waiting to come across a nice bringback. I did keep an M48 and some ammo for plinking.
Nice rifle. LOL I bet you can hit better with an AR than they can also. It is to bad that marksmanship is set aside for expensive toys at times. |
I have a 1937 K 98 RC . You did a fine job on yours. Im haveing a hard time on decideing to refinnish it or leave it as is. , WarDawg

Nice rifle. I have been thinking about getting a Mauser.....

Very nice mark, a nice mauser is on my list, you may have caused me to move it up a few places.
That IS an awesome job on that rifle Mark!
I have a newbie question. BLO? (Even I understand the mineral spirits part.) Whatever it is, the finish looks great! |
Boiled Linseed Oil, I get cans of it at Home Depot (I'm sure Lowe's has it as well). -mark |

I'm 26 and have just about worn out my 03FFL from putting it thru the copier.
Gorgeous example. Wish mine were that purty, but i've been spending so much time building ak's i haven't gotten around to refinishing any of them. I will say, however, that I have one 98K that has a bore that's almost smooth. I took it to the range once and it shot about an 8" group at 100. however, the action is still VERY smooth, and I only paid about $80 for it, so rather than let it rust away in the back of the vault i'm going to go ahead and make a hunter out of it. Yes, i realize it's a piece of history, but all the marks are peened away anyway, and it's such a poor shooter at this point I'd rather be able to get some good use out of her than just let her waste away. I wouldn't think of doing it to anything other than a bad barrel though. |
Save it, refinish in a similar fashion, hang it in your shop or Library. Then pay another 100 more for an intended hunting rifle. j/k, to everyone his own. |

oh believe me, i've already got plenty of wall-hangers for the gun/trophy room, including a 91/30 sniper. Only thing is, even the wallhangers come out to play once or twice a year. I've got a feeling if i make any more the wife will cut me off for a while, and we can't have that now can we?
besides, it's going to be a smaller caliber, probably a 6.5 or something similar so she can rifle hunt with me. every so often i'll get a gun "for my wife" so she doesn't get too upset. the more she has, the more toys she has available to bring along when WE go shooting together, and i definitely am not gonna complain about that "we" part. |
Wow! That is beautiful. I have a bunch of Turkish mausers, but no K98s (yet). I'll have to hide my sporterized Turk when we go to the range.
post some pics. It depends on condition and how many parts match. The only parts that match on this RC, is the stock, barrel and receiver. The bolt does not have any matching parts. Once you refinish these things, they drop in value, unless you do such a good job, no one can tell. I realized when I started refinishing this and my Swiss K31, they were more or less mine forever, kind of a way to guarantee you'll never sell it then regret it later. I think it's a good method. |
that's my next project for sure. |
I have two Nazi K98k snipers, a Zf-40/41 (the "original" scout rifle) and a SSR "CE". Those and about 12 or so other K98k's of all different codes are some of my favorite rifles.
Well, then there's the K43 Walther with scope............ |
pics are required after a claim like that. |
nice...
a question that you or someone else may be able to answer. Were the German snipers given match grade 8mm? |
I would like to get another Mauser to keep my M24/47 company. What's the best deal on Mausers going on now? In terms of condition and quality for price. Rarity is not an issue.
what nationality of Mauser do you want? |
I believe that there was some available, at the beginning of the war, but towards the bitter end, you took what you could get your hands on. I have Law's Backbone of the Wehrmacht but I don't have either Senich's or Law's books on the sniper variants. |

either sportmans guide or cheaper than dirt have factory mauser larg ring stainless barrels. i don't recall witch one at the moment but there are steped like origionals and made by mauser. there just under 20'' long, in the outstanding 7x57 cal. for about $55.00 last i saw in most recent catalog. e.t.a.- i'm not a salesman i just really like that chambering and think it's a sweet deal overall for repl. especally if you reload.

About a year ago I ordered a Yugo M48 from SOG and when it arrived in the mail it wasn't an M48, it was a Yugo captured K98 in almost perfect condition. The only thing done to it was the Yugo crest was stamped on it and any visible Nazi markings removed and it was refinished. Some smaller Nazi markings are still visible if you disassemble the gun. This one went right into the safe, for $89 it's a real keeper and one of the best gun deals I've gotten. I ordered another one hoping to get another K98 but got a Yugo instead. Hey, I had to try!

I'd like a German, and prefer a RC over YC. For some reason, my interest in them has climbed since last weekend. Actually, I think it was spawned by my purchase of a FN built Israeli Mauser the weekend before. Is there any specific model/year/code to ask for when ordering to get one w/a laminate stock? |

I love Mauser 98s. I have two, an 1941 model with all marks removed (what a shame) and a Steyr captured in Russia and arsenal refinished. I tried to refinish my first mauser and did a pretty crappy job of it. now that I see this, I think I will try again. What is this BLO thing I hear about. Please pardon y ignorance on this.
I have a Brno built Mauser Kar98, dated 1945. Has the Nazi proof marks AND the Star of David. It is one of the ones bought by Israel in 1948 and later rebarreled in 7.62x51mm.
Yeah I just got one of the brno built k98s with a winter triggerguard. Its pretty cool, my first real k98. I use to have a turk but I hated it so much... So I sold it.

Xavier, BLO is Boiled Linseed Oil.
I like tung oil better, but both are good stock finishes. |
This site is going to bankrupt me sooner or later. I have looked at the Mausers from afar but never paid much attention. Then this post shows up. I did nothing today but research these damn things. So long story short - I bought one this evening. It doesn't have a sling - anybody know where I can get one?
I have both books. I can do some checking. BTW BBOTW is full of flaws. Many of the rifles depicted are out of a collection that has been..um.. "enhanced". The owner passed away and the collection was sold at auction. It did not go to one of the big auction houses. ETA. I don't collect the any more I did have some nice ones,a 39 BSW-this was part of the ones that Krieghoff built in 41 due to the shortage of K98 in Russia,a BNZ41,Naval marked, some others and a SVW 45. My interest in Mausers now is pre 1918. |

A gun dealer friend of mine has 300 mausers, from different countries, he has several unopened crates full of them from WW2, I'll see if i can get a pic of his gun room, its amazing. I dont have a K98 and told him to sell me one and he wont, fucker. He loves them that much, he doesnt own any other rifles other then mausers imagine that. The one i used to have he bought from me thats how i met him, this is maybe ten years ago, i really need to pick one up, a luger too.

generally (from what I've seen) the Yugo Capture 98s seem to have been left in better condition, wood and bore, but it also seems they enjoyed removing the finish as well. using the cold blue paste I have, and enough patience to degrease the surface and put on coat after coat, you can get a similar finish to the original after a few tries. On this one I had to do it 4 or maybe 5 times. Each time having to degrease again, let it dry, and rub the paste over again, until there were no uneven blued areas. The RC's generally have the ugly electro-penciled numbers on the bolt and on the mag floor plate. Not to mention an unattractive brown extractor that the Russians refinished. The Yugo's I've seen don't have this, but some may. I'm by no means very knowledgable about masuers (maybe I should change my name?) I've just been fascinated by them since a young age and when my father and I found an amazing RC no electro pencil, refinished, metal and wood. Since then I tried to learn as much as possible. I would probably (if you want a good shooter) stick with a yugo capture, but the RCs are generally more sought after because they retain the Nazi markings. It's just a hit or miss with bore conditions with these, that's the only downside. Try to get an earlier year, as (like the arisaka rifles) quality of the receivers decreased as the war dragged on, and more and more slave labor was used to manufacture them. (So I've read). I had a Byf 44, and it had serious headspace problems, and I got rid of it. Try to get a late 30's early 40's dated receiver (and a barrel that matches the receiver). I asked for this one to be an early year when I ordered it from AIM. they followed through. -mark |

I've been scared to try Tung Oil. I've heard it needs to be done a certain way, or it can go bad. BLO mixed or not mixed with Mineral Spirits was easier for me to guage. It just takes a while to cure. -mark |
crazy. reminds me of a major arisaka collector here in the states, he has the largest collection of arisakas (my other major interest now). |
