I have a Type 84S rifle and while searching the EE I found something interesting. My rifle has only ONE (1) dimple on the left side of the receiver. The right side is flat like a Saiga or a WASR. Other Type 84S rifles hae two dimples. Any significance to this? Is my rifle "defective"? Just wondering what the deal is with this. Anyone?

It actually is defective ... A few of these made it past QC ...

Send it to me and I'll add the dimple for ya !!!

Shouldn't take more than a few years ...

Sure thing, I'll mail it to you as soon as I get some collateral such as a pre-ban Maadi or Pre-ban SA-85, an RPK74 kit would also do nicely...for tests and evaluation of course

Seriously though...does anyone know?

Sounds like a defect to me. Does the mag wobble around on one side?

The chinese arent exactly known for their QC.

No wobble at all it's actually tighter than some Romanian rifles I've seen...although that's really not saying much

Norinco 5.56x45mm
Made in China by Norinco
CSI DAL TX

Yeah .. Yeah .................. But all my Romies have a dimple on both sides ...

that means you have a prized collectable that should sell on gunbroker for about $7,000

Both my Romanians have dimples on both sides and I love them both but they wobble with east german mags, they do not wobble with bulgarian mags...hmmmm, back to my point though I feel strange being dimple-less. somebody must have an answer to this situation

The only answer I have is to cut the SOB in half ... you keep the dimpled half and I'll take the dimpleless half and be happy ...

The very thought of you feeling strange is upsetting me ...

assuming that this is a factory defect, how is it possible? since they all pop out of the same stamping die (I would assume)?

Come on guy's prime money maker? How could that be? There must be a reason for this, does anyone else have a Type 84S with only one(1) dimple or is it only just me? I was about to sell this for $800 but I am curious and will not sell until I get my answer. Where is templar when you need him?

TEMPLAR!!!.....TEMPLAR!!!....Where are you? We need your wisdom!!!!

Any other Chinese AK experts out there?

Paging Mr Jeepcreep...paging Mr. Jeepcreep...

I am begining to think that the dimple issue may be related to a "late production" issue, if anyone has a Type 84S please check your dimples and let us know 1 or 2

Otherwise I am stumped on this.

I noticed this right away when I got the rifle and was somewhat dissapointed, but I thought it was the way they all were. Since I had not seen a picture of a type 84 since the 1980s I really had no idea...it was on an SOF magazine where they did a review on he rifles

I keep looking at this picture, like a train wreck(no offense). Outside the dimples, somthing looks amiss, and I just can't put my finger on it. The safety markings..., the safety indent... something looks different.... Oh great!...now I won't be able to sleep at work today!

Sorry you missed your precious sleep at work today....I checked against my Type 56 and they look exactly alike except for the flashider and the missing dimple...it may be the lighting in the room .

The Chinese did make some stamped Type-56 rifles that didn't have dimples, but I think these were done similar to the RPK, with a plate welded inside to align the magazine.

It looks like a factory mistake to me. Take a look on the inside of the magwell and see if there's a plate or rail extension that hangs down, or if it's just blank space in there. If there's not, maybe QC has one too many rice-whiskeys the night before.

It definitely doesn't devalue the rifle in any way. I rather like it.

[#33]
I do not see a plate or anything else there. I will take a picture of the magwell and compare it to my Intrac MkII that does have dimples...we shall see
