What the fellas told me here was:

AK-47--Milled Receiver, Standard Stock
AKS--Milled Receiver, (I've seen stamped, however) Underfolder Stock
AKM--Stamped Receiver, Standard Stock
AKMS--Stamped Receiver, Underfolder Stock
AMD--Short Barreled AKM with Muzzle Brake (for legality)

If I made a mistake, please feel free to correct me!

The Hungarians didn't put the muzzle brake on the AMD to comply with U.S. laws on barrel length. It's there to improve controlability. People put barrel extensions (or longer muzzle brakes) on AMDs to comply with U.S. law.
