Yes it's off topic but I'm allowed
 .What are you guys reading right now? I just started In the Company of Heroes by Michael Durant, the pilot who's Blackhawk (Super Six Four) was shot down over Mogidishu. It's told from the first person, and is a great companion to Mark Bowden's Blawk Hawk Down. I haven't gotten very far into it but it's been great so far. Can't imagine what he went through. If you've seen the movie Blawk Hawk Down, the scene of the mob taking Shugart and Gordon down and capturing Durant is very well done, based on Durant's account. In the movie, Durant is clubbed with a rifle butt, but in the book he says that it was actually the severed arm of one of his crew. He never told anyone that for fear of causing undue harm to the friends and family of his crew mates, but that he couldn't keep quiet any more. How the fuck can people do that to one another (clubbing with a severed arm)? Anyway, I highly, highly recommend it. |

i havent read any books since i got back from iraq,.....but i will definatly look for Mr. Durants book.
other than that the centerfire systems catalog is infront of me now,....i feel like a kid looking at toys i cant afford now.

Holy Blood, Holy Grail.
Gives the idea that Jesus was married to Mary Magdelene, fathered chidren, and their decendents became kings in Europe. Points allot of details in the bible, stuff that was left out, changed in later versions, etc.. |

I have actually met Mr. Durant on Several occasions. The first was when he flew back to Ft. Campbell, KY for his "Welcome Home" ceremony. Then I had a chance to talk to him a few times and had seen him around quite a bit. I was actaually in 160th for 10 years. I was with the "Chinooks"- hence my screen name. Any way- right now I am rereading Unintended Consequences by John Ross. In my opinion, a must-read for every gun owner. |

Honestly, I have yet to make up my mind. There is something about it that bugs me, but I can't put my finger on it. Maybe it's the lack of detail....it literally reads like, This happend, then this, then this, then this and so on. Plenty of who, what, where and when, but I was hoping for more of the why and the detail therein. Seems to just scratch the surface. My take in simplest terms from the first half : George Washinngton wouldn't have accepted command if he knew how much it was going to suck. I'm hoping there is more detailed discussion later. |

Blood and Iron of the American Empire series by Harry Turtledove. I just love this alternate history stuff, esp. from HT.

Next on the list: Gates of Fire On a similar note to Templar's post - for those of you that have read Generation Kill, pick up One Bullet Away. It is written by Fick, the squad leader in Generation Kill. He gives a really good account of the war from the perspective of a Marine Recon soldier. It is the same story as Generation Kill, but from a soldier's view. |

Right now, I'm reading The Third Option by Flynn. Mind candy. Just finsihed The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors. The best Naval warfare book I've ever read. Before that, it was Breakout by Martin Russ. It is an excellent book about the Chosin Reservoir campaign in Korea. I highly recommend this one.
If you like these, give Newt Gingrich's Gettysburg series a try. Good stuff. I'm pretty sure Newt was a Professor of history somewhere along the way. It shows in his books. |
